Headphones advice

I make music and would like to improve my gear. I know that mixing on headphones is not that great but i cant use speakers (open back headphones are OK though) because of my family. What headphones would be the best ones to get for under $100. (I could go to max of 110 or 155) I've heard great things about Grado, Audio Technica, and Senheiser but if you guys know of anything else that is also great.

I'm just a random teenager from New Jersey. Why would you listen to me?

Personally, I love the Hyper X Cloud 2 and Plantronics Backbeat Pro headphones.

But since you're professionally making music, I would suggest headphones that reproduce the sound as exact as possible and for that, I'd suggest any audio technica - as high as you can spend. They have quite the rep.

Hyper X and Plantronics is nothing for making music

, right :)

and audio technica is realy nice but allso more on the listening to music side and not so much on the super exact reproducing etc side

at least in the lower budget range

If that's true, then I have no idea. I have always thought of AT as the best bang for buck at the low end for headphones which reproduce sound as exact as possible, without any extra emphasis. Then again, I'm not much of an audiophile.

I would consider my sleeve as an audiophile (and I am a music producer)

and my personal expirience is that AT are realy good but Bayerdynamics, AKG, Sennheiser etc tend to be a little more neutral at this price point.

but as everything with sound this is very personal opinion based

Can't ague with you on AKG. I recall owning one of their bluetooth headphones. Looked like: https://www.amazon.co.uk/AKG-Premium-Foldable-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B016ON147O/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1479692532&sr=8-10&keywords=akg+headphones

It was flawless.

Though I ended up returning it for a reason I cannot even remember anymore. But when it came to sound reproduction, I literally has no criticism. I was looking for something more bassy but that was just me.

Yep akg is nice but this line is allso not made for the audio

When I am mixing on headphones I am using HD700s with a focusright amp

so first question: headphone amp present? Or using the integrated mobo stuf?

No I don't have an AMP. if i could get one for like $20 then I would, but i have never seen one that cheap.

Yeh for 20$ you can simoly use your internal stuf...

Sennheiser HD 559 is 150$ and will do a nice job of reproducing the sound pretty accurate Even not being a "studio headphone"

if if you want something wich is called studio headphone. Then get the AKG K612PRO

they are allso 150$ and allso nice but have 120Ohm wich is pretty stiff to drive for an normal crappy sound card on a mobo

I know this is your total max budget, but headphones for mixing should ba at least around this price spot.

150 is above my prices. I have heard good things about the Grado sr60 and sr80, do you know anything about those?

what about getting some classic studio headphones? The MDR7406, they should be just fine for mixing, you still find them in studios, so yeah.

I have seen the k612 in studios, but they are above your budget.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

My only concern about the Sony's is that they dont look so comfortable.

The problem is, cans within your stated budget tend to have exaggerated signature sound, like they tend to be bass heavy to cater to popular consumer taste (because that's where the money is at). The ATH-M40X, while having less bass than its more popular M50X sibling, is not exactly neutral sounding (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The only neutral'ish Audio Technica can I've heard thus far is the ATH-R70x, ever so slightly boosted bass, none of that forward sounding mids that Audio Technica cans are known for, and mildly tweaked treble which sounded mildly veiled to me (I'm an unabashed treblehead). I'd been using my Fostex HP-A4 only, which tend to warm up the sound, will try my Oppo HA-1 over the weekend.

Only at higher price bracket would you find cans that cater to.......let's say, a more specific/refined audience. The Sony MDR7506 is pretty good given its price tag, if you want something more neutral sounding, you may have to pony up some more moolah. Of course, I can't say with any certainty that there isn't a can within your budget that would ideal for you given the sheer number of cans available within your stated budget, perhaps you could look around, find something that piqued your interest and link it here. That way, the audio bigheads here (like Dackzy, SML, Dark Wizzle, KaminKevCrew) can weigh in on their opinions. I'm pretty new at this, so I'm still learning.....

What's a "neutral" headphone? I think the best one can hope for is a reasonably "uncolored" headphone. Yes, there's a difference.

I would opt for AKG K612 Pro, here. They have a nice smooth signature all things considered, except for a little zing up top. My concern with the Sennheiser HD5xx line is that they may be thick enough in the low mids/upper bass as to make your mix too bass light or thin.

If that's too expensive, and/or you are too scared of the K612 being too hard to drive, I would go for the Sony MDR-7506. These are reasonably close to a small set of monitors in terms of signature.

well they aren't the most comfy headphones ever, but they aren't that bad, and as gamerdude said, headphones in this price range is usually have a fair bass boost, because that is simply where the money is at, because of the beats generation ( young people who love lots of bass)

if you can get the k612, then get them, if they are simple too expensive then get the mdr 7506
