i have a laptop with 1tb HDD, and i plan to build a budget gaming pc, also i need an external hard disk, so these are my options:

  1. 250gb SSD for laptop, use laptop HDD with enclosure, and buy a 1tb hard disk for gaming pc
  2. no upgrades on laptop, get a 120gb ssd and 1tb hdd for gaming pc, and buy an external hard disk
  3. 120gb ssd each for laptop and desktop, laptop harddisk with enclosure, and 1tb HDD for gaming pc
  4. 250gb SSD for laptop, use laptop HDD for gaming pc, buy an external hard disk (saves on buying an enclosure)

the ssd for laptop is because i can just connect it to the monitor for a desktop experience (with battery removed), for when i'm browsing and watching videos, and the desktop is just used purely to play games. though it concerns me whether or not to use laptop for prolonged hours since dust collects over time and laptop aren't easy to clean, also this is a 2 year laptop that i never opened up.

i also do not know whether 120gb ssd will be enough as ssd perform better when in 80% capacity, so i shouldn't fill it full.

btw are Samsung 850 ssd much worth it? it's much more expensive compared to something like Apacer SP550 so is there a difference other than read and write speed?

Also, option #2 seems best to me, especially because you already have 1Tb HDD on your laptop.

option #2 is hassle-less, since i dont need to do anything to my laptop, but the downside is the awfully slow speed especially when i fill it up with movies, and when i get a external hard disk to move all those to, the extra space just seems kinda a waste for not using.

If you can deal with the slow speed I say option 2. However, if you cannot, then option 3/4. depending on how much you use your laptop compared to your PC.

i would used which ever pc that has an os installed on a ssd, my laptop is for college work but i don't frequently need it at the college, so if there is a ssd in my laptop and none on my desktop, i would use the laptop more often with a monitor connected at home, but if my desktop is the one with a ssd, then i guess my laptop won't be touched anymore unless i need a laptop at college.

so ultimately it's a decision whether to choose a ssd for laptop or desktop.

ideally i wanted option #3 but a laptop with no secondary storage, a 120gb might not cut it, and i don't know how much storage i will use since i don't have a external hard disk to put all media files into and see how much my program fills up the storage.
