Hello all,

As we know Christmas is coming up (crazy right).

I am planning on upgrades among many things which one of them being the graphics card.

Now I am deciding between upgrading to a 1060 or a 1070. But there is a catch.

I am planning on upgrading my RAM, case power supply, MOBO and storage.

I will only be able to do either upgrade one or upgrade pretty much 99% of my computer.

Also: Regarding my PC specs below, should I upgrade my PSU anyways? If so, how much should I get? 600W?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Current PC Specs:

CPU: Xeon 1231-v3

MOBO: Asus H81-D PLUS Mirco ATX

RAM: 8GB Cruical Ballistix Sport (4GB X 2)

PSU: EVGA 430W 80+ Bronze

Case: Cooler Master N200 Mid-tower

GPU: EVGA 950 GTX GeForce SC

Yeah sorry, forgot to mention the DDR3 part :P The CPU was upgraded from a Pentium G3258. So i don't plan on upgrading that anytime soon. But, I'd rather spend the money on a GPU now and see if current gen LGA 1151 prices drop when intel releases knew stuff.

Games ranging from Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, GTA V to games like Rust, DOOM, CSGO, Garry's Mod. Just a wide range of stuff

A 1060 will do well at 1080p

A 1070 is more suited for 1080p 144hz gameplay or 1440p 60hz (maybe some 144hz, but with dropping some visual eye-candy) gamplay.

Also you can use 1440p at 1080p. it is called DSR for Nvidia or VSR for AMD. basically upscales everything on-screen, then downsamples to native resolution. It is not the same as running a game at native 1440p but it will smooth out jaggies and sharpen textures and what-not

Awesome. Well in the long run. For what games I want to play, would it be better to go with the 1060 or 1070? Because I don't want to have to buy another GPU in like 2 years time. (If at all possible)

the 1070 is the more future-proof option here, but IMO you should save some money and get a 1060, unless you find a very good deal on a 1070. then use that money to upgrade the rest of your PC.

Alternatively you can wait out on upgrading on a CPU until AMD Zen drops. And until then you can spend some of your budget on the case and power supply.

What would you consider a good deal on a 1070? :P

When they drop at or below their original MSRP, which is $379. It is unlikely though, considering how in-demand Nvidia's cards are right now and have been since Pascal launched. You may find some 1070s below $399 though, which is a pretty decent deal.

Even though I only have a 1080p monitor 1440p still worth it?

A 1070 is a great 1080p GPU, with a lot of future-proofing built into it. However, it still can't run all games at 1080p and max settings, and get a constant 60 FPS. Though such games are currently the exception, their numbers will increase, going forward.

A 1060 will require you to lower graphical settings in many graphically-intensive games, in order to have a constant 60 FPS.

I'd be more concerned about your PSU than your GPU, tbqh. The EVGA 430W isn't terrible by any stretch, but I'd think twice about plugging in a GPU that's going to really tax it.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.
