Hey all

I got a good deal on 2x Adata 512GB SSDs and thought ill run these in Raid0 for some rendering and gaming. Now to my question, does it make more sense to run Hardware Raid or Software Raid?

This is how my current setup look like:

Intel 5820k

Gigabyte X99-ud4 Mobo

1x Samsung evo 850 Boot drive (Windows 10)

1x Samsung evo 850 Boot drive (ArchLinux)

Nvidia GTX 970

Of coures it would be cool if i could run these drives on both OS^s but i would probably maily use it for Windows because my CAD and Adobe stuff runs mostly only on windows.

If i deciede to go with a hardware raid do i need to reinstall my os^s because then i have my answer.

Thanks for taking the time reading, and hope for some useful comments.

I'm looking into software RAID myself. My understanding so far is that using a RAID card is ideal as long as the RAID card doesn't die. Motherboard is problematic as even a BIOS update can break the RAID. Windows software RAID is apparently more robust than motherboard and while I'm still trying to confirm it I have seen some post on forums and tech sites saying it can survive a move to new motherboard, but as I say I'm still trying to confirm that.

I spend too much on my PC. Then I spend even more on my Sim Rig. Damn, this stuff's expensive.

I'd go with software RAID. The intel onboard software RAID supports TRIM natively. Not all hardware RAID controllers do. That and the price for a proper hardware RAID controller with a battery can cost a lot of money, where it's actually cheaper to go buy a NVMe drive instead of a hardware RAID card. Other bit is that you need to create the RAID0 before installing Windows and then load the RAID card driver while installing Windows so Windows can actually pick up the RAID card volume. It's a bit of headache for a simple two drive RAID0 array.

Yes, you will have to reinstall both OSes. RAID wipes the drives clean, regardless of software or hardware RAID.
