I am a junior in college majoring in CS, getting a new computer. All the high end computers that I see or build logs online are for gaming. I can't seem to find a forum post on an updated build for this year.

So I am wondering what would be recommended? I do play some games on my current pc but not a whole lot and I know that I want Windows 10 Pro because of the features it offers for programmers rather than home. Obviously don't want to downgrade.

Currently running on laptop:

Processor: Intel i7-4700HQ 2.4GHz

Ram: 8GB

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M

If you have any suggestions let me know.

Budget: $1100 or less USD

Black and white theme with plenty of power, honestly super overkill for just programming. Added a 1050ti for light 1080p gaming

no gpu? I would get a rx 460 just for aethetics - i would suggest a white black build - red black is too racy for programming - are you doing backend of front end?

Currently running on the GPU in OP. I am looking at the GTX 1060 6GB but I think it may be overboard. I don't really care what color honestly.

1060 is too much if you aren't playing AAA titles

look mine, has a decent enough for medium 1080p gaming and does what you need, even hardcore video rendering

I recommend you lookup CPUs on https://openbenchmarking.org/showdown/pts/build-linux-kernel

Xeon and i7's are on top but for price/performance in compiling I went with AMD FX; this was five years ago. I do not recommend buying a FX now because the AM3 socket is not going to be used for next years AMD Zen

simliar to the build i have - but instead of a 6800k its a 5830k

i can tell you right now that you will need the 6 cores if you do software engineering (not if you decide to do full time front end) also the 32gigs of ram is essential for running vms - ssd is a plus although not really necessary - and the liquid cooler is the most aesthetically pleasing one and it actually runs better than a h100i

If your just playing at 1080p this is more than enough for 1080p. Chose the 1050ti because it resembles a GTX 960 which was quite a powerful 1080p gaming graphics card.

You don't have to use a 6600k or a overclockable motherboard, that is your choice. But this is what I recommend. This is what I built for a lot of people who are simple graphic designers or make 1080p video content. And if you are also using this for gaming you will be getting a profound 60 fps in most games.

Be nice to members on the forum. We are friendly here. Moving on, this GPU is not overpriced for it performance in any way shape or form. 750 Watt is being chosen to expand for other accessories in the future, of course he can choose his own power supply and no one can hold him back from that. the 1050ti is not overpriced for price to performance. This thing is amazing with gaming at 1080p maybe depending on the game 1440p or 1080p Ultrawide.

My bad if I offended you, I was just saying there are better options. No offense was intended.

1050ti is a good card; that Gaming X model is overpriced by like $30 and doesn't match the color scheme, so it doesn't make sense.

Even 550W would be fine with a 6800K and 1080, so 750 is unnecessary even for expansion, since he isn't going to be SLIing anyway.

Unlike previous versions, Microsoft requires a full retail version for DIY Windows 10 systems (https://www.microsoft.com/OEM/en/licensing/sblicensing/Pages/windows-licensing-for-personal-use.aspx). Pro would be ~18% of the budget. What required features does it have that are not in the standard version?

SSD storage greatly improves program development performance.

I have been reading up on this. Does this mean if I install and then later down the road I want a fresh install with the same hardware, I have to buy a new license ?

Not sure what you are asking.

Technically a Windows 10 OEM license, (Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bit)), is for use by commercial system builders. The key is tied to a particular hardware combination. However, replacing failed parts, including cpu, is generally possible.

A full license, (Microsoft Windows 10 Home (32/64-bit)), is transferable provided it is only useable on one system at a time.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
