Alright so, just had my MSI 970 Gaming MoBo die on me the other night, now I'm left with an 8320 and no board, I also have an MSI Z97 PC Mate board that I'm currently using with a G3258 until I buy new hardware. The issue is, do I buy a MoBo with a outdated socket and keep using my 8320, or shell out around $250 for a better CPU for the Intel board? Not really looking to spend a bunch either, $250 is about the max I really want to spend on a CPU if I go that route.

If I go the MoBo route, what is even on the market now that's worth the price and not completely outdated by 5 years lol

any help is greatly appreciated.

Well... Haswell cpus are still amazing so the 4690k will be an awesome choice i guess, even outperforms that amd cpu by a lot. You can also buy a new mobo if you thought the amd ran fine tho. If i had the money i'd get a new cpu. I5s run cooler and use less power too, if that matters to u.

Yeah I've been looking at some 4670/4690ks on ebay and they're right around my price point, would love more power but I can't justify spending $400+ on a CPU right now lol

My 8320 Ran like a champ for the most part but I think it was held back by some issues on the board, had USB connectivity issues from the time I bought it so it was just a matter of time. I'd love to get it up and running but my issue is all the boards that are still being sold either have crap reviews or aren't worth the money anymore.

I would  go with a I5/I7 4XXX (when you pick a K than go with an updated I5/I7 4X90K ) would be even a nice upgrade from a 8320 and no way a bottleneck for more or less evrything you fire at it.

I might have to take a trip to my local microcenter since they have the 4690k for $190 right now, any idea if it would have any performance increase when paired with the R9 280X that I'm currently running? Was looking to upgrade to an RX 480 or 1060 but with the MoBo failing that plan kind of fell through lol

On CPU demanding titles yes (GTA V maybe, CS GO, Arma III, Civilization and such) but most not that much I guess.

That's what I figured, been mostly playing Horizon 3 and Skyrim SE recently, I'm sure the extra single threaded performance would help. Now I have the difficult choice of the 4690k for $190 or go all out and get the 4790k for $270 and get some help from a relative that's in the mood to be generous lol

Sell AMD CPU and buy used Haswell CPU. Or DC if you find good deal.

I think at most I'd get like $100 for my 8320 on ebay, (if it sells) would help the hit to my wallet a bit, also no 100% sure that it was the MoBo that died since it's possible it could have been the CPU as well (don't currently have any way to test them independently). Definitely considering hitting up microcenter soon for the i5 and depending on how much I have on me when I go, possibly even the i7 since microcenter is the cheapest I've found so far.

Well I would buy the i7 4790K for 190$ (because the absolute cheapest deal I found in Germany was 230€ used) and I use several software that benefit from HT

If you only want to use the system for gaming and everyday use than a i5 would fit perfectly, I7 would be a waste of money.
