I have a dell xps 8300 I transplanted to a new case and now want a new CPU fan to maybe over clock. It's a hyper t2, I removed the old fan no issue but can't get the new fan to plug into the mobo. Do I need to remove the backplate for this to fit? Or can I just not put a new fan cause it's a prebuilt?

Dell XPS systems tend to use non-standard 5-pin layouts for their fans so that you cannot swap in aftermarket fans. That being said, The XPS systems also tend to have excellent cooling, albeit a little on the loud side.

EDIT: you can use normal fans if you change the pinout, you'll have to look online though to find what pinout Dell used on that specific board.

At the end of the day though, you cant overclock it because I don't think Dell has ever released computers with K cpu's and ZA chipsets.

When in doubt, re-format.

What about the CPU fan? The t2 said it's compatible with sandy bridge

it would work though since intel never changed the socket dimensions after the first gen i7s on LGA 1156

Dell uses non-standard fan pinouts. You can use any fan, so long as you get the pins wired right.

The point I am making is that replacing the cooler on your XPS will be pointless since the cooler on it is quite good, AND you cannot overclock the cpu anyway.

When in doubt, re-format.
