intel motherboard problems

I have an intel motherboard with a red led light. I have never had a motherboard with a red light. i tried to boot it up without a heatsink (there were a few messages) and it crashed. The red led light stayed on and would't boot, and so i bought a new heat sink and installed the heat sink. I removed the battery and reset the CMOS and it is as if I hadn't done any of these things and the red light just stays on and won't boot. Only the fan works.

 

How to I reset the motherboard and start completely over,

There must be some way of reseting it that i don't know about.

You might have damaged the CPU

But why would you boot without the heatsink?

i didn't know before, i'm a newbie. I have also tried to remove battery and the light is still on, I will try to remove the cpu and try another, it maybe that the cpu is not compatable, but it is compatable in a listing i have found.

Read the manual to figure out what the led is telling you, usually a red led is warning you of a problem.
