IS it possible to mod R9 290x? to just put a fan on the reference design fan to make it cooler?

 

2 fans produce more air then 1?

 

mabye a crazy idea but will it change temps to lower and is it possible?

Just wait for aftermarket coolers.

 

AMD have made their cooler too restrictive, blocking out the back. I'd bet if they've made the exhaust holes at the back bigger, make the heatsink from all copper and opened up the back, there would be a considerable decrease in temperatures.

If TTL is right, then it will probably be sometime in late December or January before we see aftermarket coolers.

oh look a 780 at 85*c but at 66% fan speed, so nvidia boys do know how to change fan profiles after all!

and another, once his card gets to 57*c his fan goes to 80% (custom fan profile, a pretty nice job)

Im no amd fanboy (actually im looking at buying a gtx295 to add to my collection) but Im sick of these bullshit double standards, im starting to wonder how people know which end to wipe...

the 480 was super loud and they still use the same fan (infact its only had minor changes since the 200 series, i prefer the fan vane style but theres still little difference)

Well can't find it, might not be available on mobile. As to the remark about the Titan, the Titan/780 are able to keep themselves within reasonable temps without being loud.

beebskadoo, i like you as a forum member, i mean no personal disrespect but everyone seems to take tom logans word (who only lives up the road from me has a near identacle background and the same name as i) as the gospel and 100% correct and the be all and end all, ive seen that video before and the nvidia fans are like "lawls, amds card is so loud what a fail", completely missing the point that EVERY fan is loud at 100% and they completely forget that its the same thing with the gtx285, 480, 580, 780, they all  produce roughly the same 200w heat output (300 watts or so for 780) and all have the same fan. its one thing i love about the nvidia coolers is its nearly how I myself would have designed it (i would of made the vanes a little bit longer for more static pressure), amds fan's vanes have a little bit of a weird curve on it but its still a good cooler, works exactly the same way.

amd's fan mode is set far too low in the bios and TTL never did anything about it, even say for instance the fan speed/noise level was still worse than the titan (and we're talking here about a mix of noise level, gpu temp, performance in any given game and fan speed ALL being taken into account) its a mute issue because the only people who buy reference are the water cooling guys, I hope this doesnt come across as nasty by the way im being very sincere now.

look at your evga 580, it uses the same fan as the titan/780/770/680/580/480/285 I know how loud it is at 100%, i have to run my fan at 75% to keep my gpu at 70*, the 290x will be exactly the same, which is exactly the same as the videos above with 780's needing 75-80% fan speed to keep it at 57*c, i imagine you could put either card down to 65% fan speed and have it at 80*c which is more typical.

OK I understand what you're saying. But it's the fact that AMD engineered a chip that overpowers the cooler, I would be as disappointed with Nvidia if they had done the same thing.

Tom did do something about it, he tested the OC at Max fan speed, a 100mhz OC was still unstable at Max fan speed. See the reference card water cooling argument is moot. 1% of the people who buy cards are gonna water cool them, and most people that have cards are reference designed cards. OK let's say that what you are saying is true, the aftermarket cards aren't available at launch. None of them. AMD failed at that point having not given board vendors access to the design in time to make aftermarket coolers. TTL said that Asus won't have Direct CUII cards until the signing of next year....that's 3 months! Going by your logic that means most people won't be getting the cards available now because they only get aftermarket cooled cards. Silly.

The fact is that you shouldn't have to WC your cards in order to get them to run at the advertised clock speeds. There are major throttling issues at any bios setting. 200mhz below rated In some cases. That's because the card simply can't handle itself. That is what I am saying. TTL is right on a lot of points most of them in fact and he has the data to back it up.

I'll take that as red then but it could just be the silicon lottery hes always on about,

and the titan/780 doesnt come with aftermarket coolers, they come with ones that you fit.

TBH i dont know why all these "inflated" gpu cards like the 780/titan/290x dont use the same coolers as the gtx690/7990 seeing as thats what they effectively are, mount the fan in the middle and have heatsinks both side and the card will therefore have more cooling surface area (need i say more)

both companies get the short straw here just amds is a bit shorter, but we're still going to have to put up with all the nvidia die hards still saying the same stuff again, and again and again, plenty of people still talk about runt issues as if amd never released a new driver that 95% fixed it ("is no longer an issue" as pcper put it).
