Antivirius Help

Go to solution Solved by Slottr,

Windows defender and Malware Bytes mix. Get the premium subscription when its on sale for like 10-15 bucks. Well worth it.

So I currently use the free windows defender antivirus. I want a better one, but I don't want to pay for it. I tried Avast and it slowed down my computer and a lot of it's features required money. Does anybody know of a decent Antivirus program that's free, works well, and doesn't slow down my computer too much?

This is exactly what I use. That said, I'm a technician, and know how to avoid bad stuff on the internet, so you might still want an AV suite.

MBAM Premium is well worth the money and great at preventing unknown exploits in the wild, but does not replace a good AV Suite.

AVIRA is what I've started to recommend as a FREE AV Suite since Avast announced they may be purchasing AVG.

Otherwise, I wholeheartedly recommend paying for Kaspersky or ESET Node32 if you want the best protection with decent support.

Requires a little configuring and then you have the best overall free protection available.

Thought I would add my own opinion.  Windows Defender is fine, but if you want a good free antivirus use Sophos Home.  In the end, antivirus is always going to be useless unless you actually need it.  And most of the time you don't need it, Windows Defender is fine, it runs scheduled scans automatically I beileve.  If you configure malwarebytes to run scheduled scans or something else, it's up to you, then that is more than enough.

You should be less worried about standard malware anyway, and more worried about exploits, they are more common and also have more access to your system usually depending on the exploitation method, and the payload.  I suggest using Emet, it's free. https://www.microsoft.com/en-nz/download/details.aspx?id=50766   and use a browser like Chrome, Firefox or Edge because they have protection included.  Make sure to stay off dodgy sites, if you are really worried use a sandbox like Sandboxie.
