PXE-2.1 error when booting

Go to solution Solved by pyrojester009,

Thanks for all the help. I figured it out. I was going to update the bios but decided to clear the bios first. After that didnt work, I browsed the optiond more. Found an option to hide or show the lan boot options. Through that, I was able to disable it completely. Once again thanks for all the help.

Hey guys. I bought a motherboard that came out of an Alienware Aurora R-2 the other day and got it yesterday. After the POST screen, it goes to the next and some stuff for Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 comes up. It sits on this screen for about 2 mins or so. I went through the BIOS and removed it from the boot options and it still comes up. I did some searching on the internet and others had luck making the HDD as first boot. That didn't work for me. I also read that it is trying to look for a network drive to boot from because it can't find anything to boot from locally. Not sure if thats the case or not, but I do not have a network boot drive. I also tried disabling the boot rom for it and it just enables itself upon reboot. Any input would be very appreciated.

Did you try disabling "boot from USB/Network"? http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/48365-pxe-error-on-boot-up/page__view__findpost__p__253136

What options do you have about network in the bios?

What is your motherboard?

I saw that exact post when I was looking for info. I have my third boot option completely disabled. There is no other options other than to disable the ROM or the LAN all together. And as I mentioned above, the ROM just re-enables itself upon reboot.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Alienware-Aurora-R2-LGA1156-Motherboard-W-O-Tray-RV30W-/251351341654?pt=Motherboards&hash=item3a85b51a56  That's the motherboard.

Did you try to do a BIOS update by any chance? Things do not re-enable themselves in the BIOS unless it was flashed with a corrupt image.

You probably should download the latest BIOS image, stick it on a USB flash drive formatted with a FAT-32 partition space, and reflash the BIOS, if that doesn't work check the manual and do a BIOS reset. There is usually a button or jumper on the motherboard for this.

Found this just checking did you disable "Onboard LAN Boot ROM" in Integrated Devices?

Here is the download link for the bios: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/alienware-aurora-r2

Instructions (would recommend this method): How to create a DOS bootable USB:http://www.howtogeek.com/136987/how-to-create-a-bootable-dos-usb-drive/

Run the BIOS update utility from DOS environment (Non-Windows users)

NOTE: You will need to provide a bootable DOS diskette. This executable file does not create the DOS system files.

  1. Copy the file AuroraR2-A04.exe to a bootable floppy.
  2. Boot from the floppy to the DOS prompt.
  3. Run the file by typing Y:\AuroraR2-A04.exe (where y is the drive letter where the executable is located).

I would do a CMOS reset after this. You can reset CMOS by moving the jumper to 2-3 and leaving it for 5 seconds and moving it back to the original place of 1-2 when the computer is off and the power supply is unplugged and turned off. This jumper is located beside the CMOS battery where it says CLEAR_CMOS.

I did consider updating the BIOS as an option. The default is A00 and it currently has A01 so i didnt consider it too much. It does make sense that maybe it had a bad flash. It seemed a little weird that an option would just re-enable itself. The LAN Boot ROM is the item that keeps re-enabling itself then i disable it. So yes, I tried taking that off. I will look into updating the BIOS asap but I will clear the CMOS first and see if theres any difference. I will keep you guys posted. Thanks for all the help so far.
