Hello,

I'm looking at two different mechanical keyboards currently on sale at Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201063 with MX Browns and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201084 with MX Blacks.

I like the keyboard with Blacks better with regards to aesthetics, and I've seen some people suggest Blacks for gaming.
However, I've seen others recommend Browns for more multipurpose uses, and I would do some schoolwork on this keyboard.

Which would you recommend?

Also, if you suggest Browns over Blacks because of additional tactile feedback, how do you think O-ring dampeners would affect that?

Thanks.

The main differences between Brown and Black are that Brown are going to be a bit lighter (less stiff to push), and they will have a tactile "bump" that you feel as you press a key down, letting you know when the keystroke has registered.

Black switches are linear, which means they have no bump. This might let you mash a key multiple times faster than you could if it had a bump, but honestly I don't think it's going to make much a difference in your gaming.

Personally, I would go with Brown. They're the most popular switch type and a good starting spot if this is your first mechanical keyboard. Adding O-rings aren't going to affect the tactile feedback much. It might make the switches "bounce back" a bit more and give a bit of sound dampening, but it's not that big of a difference for most people. I use the thicker O-rings (blue from WASD) and enjoy them.

Also, Rosewill makes the RK-9000v2 with Brown switches. Looks like it's not on Newegg but it is on Amazon.

My self I like the cherry mx browns with o-rings. If your like me and tend to rest your fingers on the keys a bit the little bump can be just enough to prevent accidentally pressing keys and gives you clear feedback when you do press a key. The o-rings help cut the noise a bit but for me its more about limiting the travel after the switch is actuated. Cherry mx switches have about 4mm of travel with the actuation point in the middle at 2mm, but can still move down 2mm more. I run 1.5 mm o-rings to cut down the travel after switch actuation. I just find the shorter travel more comfortable and some people claim it to be faster to type or game on because of the shorter travel its quicker to reset the key.

I like browns a lot more than any other switch, they are not as loud like blues but not as soft as red. Also the MX Brown keyboard you are picking
( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201063 ) Is one of my favorite keyboards of all time. It has back lighting and braided cables this keyboard has a lot more features than the other keyboard you are wanting to buy.

Now for the O-rings, I would buy them if you get the black switches, the effect of damping the sound wont be as powerful as getting a brown switches. To be honest you should buy your o-rings after getting your keyboard, if you feel the sound is too loud then get the o-rings, if it sounds fine then you just saved yourself some money. Using O-rings should not effect the feedback of the keyboard, from what I have experienced. Only get o-rings if you think your keyboard is too loud for you.
