Mining Rig help

Tiber1337

Hey guys a friend is trying to mine a new coin but he doesn't know alot regarding the hardware part of it, he's more the configurations guy.

He wants a rig that has around 4-5 GPU's , its going to be GPU only type of mining, any ideas are welcome

This is what he had in mind so far :

-ASRock H81 Pro BTC

-5x rx 470

-Any haswell Dual Core cpu.

-A solid 850w power suply

Questions regarding current ides :

- Will Pci-e 1x be enough for the 470 when it comes to mining , bandwidth wise and all?-

-What about ading a 1x -16x extender or PCI -USB risers > will those give enough bandwidth?

-What about PCI -USB risers?

-What should I change in the rig?

The faster we do the purchase the better

No. If the slot is physically x1, it won't work and may hinder performance of the GPU.

It'll fit the GPU but the total speed will be PCIe x1.

Won't work as the RX 470 only comes in PCIe.

Go for two cards as the CPU doesn't have the lanes to support 4 or 5 cards in SLI.

You should think this through.

Yes, more then enough bandwith, you will need to use Powered RISERS though!

Bandwidth is 9/10 not the issue it's power.

-What about PCI -USB risers?

I'm using the following risers: https://mineshop.eu/cables/pci-e-1x-to-16x-powered-usb-riser-ethereum-mining-detail (Not in any way affiliated with them, they are just the closest shop for me with these risers)

-What should I change in the rig?

Maybe a stronger power supply, because you do not want to run it at 90%+ of its capacity 24/7

Altcoint mining is a volatile market, don't invest into it if you cant miss the cash.

Is GPU mining still worth it?

I hear that this is already in the past since there are devices for it: AntMiner S7.

Just wondering if that's still true :)

Bitcoint mining is not worth it. There are a lot of new cryptocurrencys appearing that can only be GPU mined.

ASIC hardware compatibility depends on the mining program. I wouldn't do any mining to be honest and just invest in a mutual fund or something.

Yeah that's what I thought.

But may I ask what cryptocurrencys is worth to mine with GPU or CPU those days? If you maybe have any info regarding that.

I agree with that. But still, it's interesting idea to earn money from running program on your PC.

Could you build me a rig made only for mining so I have an idea? gotta order the parts today

your current build looks pretty good, like I said i recommend a higher PSU, like 1000 to 1200 Watt, check the efficiency curve and calculate what will be more efficient because after all to make a profit your costs's need to be as low as possible.

You can use unpowered risers but I would recommend against that, because every card is going to pull 75 watt from the motherboard and that will kill it over time.

I might be that I can make the power cost be next to nothing nomatter the wattage
