Helloo everyone. :D

Soo...  From time to time days I get calls from private numbers...  And that made me thinking. How does it work? Can I somehow see callers number? Is it even possible? If I am the pranker, am I safe from police?

Thanks a lot for every respond on this topic.

To make an out going private call, just dial *67(area-code)-number. You can't see caller number or caller I'd, and I don't think you can call back. You aren't hidden from cops though, by no cops will waste there time dealing with prank calls.

Anyone with a recent android phone can hide their number so they appear as "Unknown caller" when they call others. ( I dunno about IOS)

it's configurable in the advanced calling settings.

It only works on calls though. not text.

Don't know how secure it is "police-wise" though

easily done on iOS too through settings>phone>show my caller ID.

Pretty sure police can still trace it though, I think it's more for privacy than really hiding.

It can be done on any phone, landline, mobile, whatever using *67. Used to do it a few years ago.

It can be funny. I prank called Nike with some friends a few years ago and went through a 20 minute process of filing a formal complaint becuase I claimed that their slogan "just do it" encouraged my "14 year old daughter" to get pregnant.

Thanks a lot for every respond on this topic.

Others have already touched on the details, but first and foremost, hell no, it will not protect you from Police. They will still be able to track your phone number, and if used on a land-line, will be able to track your address almost instantly (including a Payphone, btw). On a cellphone they will be able to find out who the account holder of the phone is, and the address on file.

Most Mobile Phone providers have an option in your online account to switch Private Calling on or off. There is no way for a normal person to figure out your number, as they would need specialized equipment not available to the general public, or to have access to the Mobile Phone providers internal network.

On a land line, you can usually request your number become private (permanently, at least until you request it removed) from your phone provider. In North America, there's a dial prefix code that will make the next dialed call appear as private - I assume the UK has some equivalent.
