So, basically what I did is I booted from a USB to put windows on my new ssd and kept the same installation on my HDD which I will later remove. I upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7 when it was still free to do so. My problem is that when I go to insert the product key for windows 10 on my ssd,  the new product key on my HDD from when I upgraded from windows 7 has characters that "can't appear in the product key." How the heck do I license this new installation of windows then? I mean I own windows 10 and all I'm essentially doing is moving it onto my ssd.....

anybody know how to solve this? Is it worth calling Microsoft? I'm not paying for something that I already technically own. It's bs.

  1. Make sure the HDD is disconnected.
  2. Don't enter thw Windows 7 key, just skip that part.
  3. When the install is done, go to Activation in the settings. It should activate that way since your license associated with the motherboard. You technically never have to enter a key again for that set of hardware.

The OEM licence, you have, is tied to your hardware ids(unique id of every hardware device in your computer) so even if you change the hdd with a similar one it will give you the same results as you are experiencing now but don't be blue, follow what DeadEyePsycho said ( never thought I will be saying that :) )
