Long time reader first time poster :) So, I just finished my first build and installed an H100i. I had problems with the installation for example I rubbed off some of the thermal compound (by accident) and I believe the back plate is not positioned correctly thus the block isn't making full contact. My plan is to strip the PC and put on some new compound and reinstall the cooler. I'm running a 4770k it idles around 26-35 and on 100% load I reached 80+! Any theories on why I might be facing these issues? Thanks in advance :)

first off, welcome to LinusTechTips forums.

depending on what app you are using to stress the CPU to get your 80°+ does sound

like it is correct and no amount of mount/remount will cure this issue. Haswell seems

to not play well with certain applications and depending on motherboard package, some

incorporate an adaptive mode that will yield higher than manual clocking temperatures.

i'd say at this point you have no issue unless your ambient temperature is less than 15°.

This is also true with Haswell and non custom loops, Thx for reminding me :D

Yeah, the backplate for the H100i CAN go on 2 ways, but there's only 1 way that's right, if it's on the other way it can be lose and you lose tight connection between CPU/Cooler, so reapply TIM, and make sure the backplate is on right!

I was running prime95 so that might have been why.

If i remember correctly the backplate has a notched side that should face the top of your mobo to accommodate the existing Intel retention bracket's two screws that stick out. As for thermal paste i go with MX4 because its non conductive and non capacitive. Also, use Aida64 to stress test. GL

I had a similar issue with my H100i and so I cleaned off the thermal compound and applied my own! Then all my temps were just fine. Also when I did this I removed the 2 stock fans for NF-F12!!! (Highly recommended for the future)
