Hey LinusTechTips forum,

Was wondering about an issue I have had for months upon months. I have had problems getting good, stable framerates in games that should run MORE than fine on my current hardware (listed below) and have had no idea why. Originally I thought it was my GPU so I got an EVGA 1080. Nothing. Then I thought it was my CPU, so I swapped it out for the same model. Nothing. I had to replace my PSU because it went out but that is also not the issue. The only things left are the RAM and Motherboard. The RAM has run great and I have never had problems with it. However, my Motherboard is MSi and I have had terrible experiences with them previously. People with much inferior hardware are able to push games harder than I can and I do not understand. Please explain to me what I can do to troubleshoot or find the problem.

My specs:

EVGA 1080

i7-4770k

MSi GD65 Gaming

GSkill 8x2 (16GB) RAM @ 1866mhz

EVGA 1050 Watt PSU

First of all doubt it's a hardware issue, unless the CPU bottlenecks somehow. What games you talk about? What is your screensetup and resolution? Is all updated properly? If it are games that you run in DX 12, switch to DX11. Do you have other stuff running in background?

Have you seen your CPU usage during those problems, and I am not talking about total CPU usage. In taskmanager in the performance tab rmb the graph and select the option to see the locigal cores instead of total usage.

Is your stuff underclocked? Also, check for dust buildup in the fans.

I have underclocked, overclocked it, and everything in between. I cleaned my PC last week and keep it very clean.

Games I am talking about are Battlefield 4, CSGO (ikr), and GTA V. I have a 144hz 1080p monitor. All my drivers are updated and checked. I have nothing else running the background. Friends that have a 970 GPU and a i5 processor can run BF4 at over 200 WHILE streaming and I can not even stay at a constant 144 not streaming.

I will check CPU usage in the logical core menu. I was previously just using the percentages.

4770K throttling from overheating maybe?

Which cooler you use? the 4770K is known for being a very hot chip.

I use Swiftech H220x, under load temps are maybe 55C

All in all, still very lost.

Video settings maybe for your friend at low settings (only way he can get near 200 with 1 970), while you use higher settings? Anyway, for now still think the CPU is holding the 1080 back or it are certain video settings. GTA V  gets barely over 60 on ultra on 1080p.

You have geforce experience enabled? Maybe that changed certain videosettings?

Nah, I have checked settings for hours. Its just me. I do have geforce enabled but I do not use it since I adjust my own video settings. So it didnt change anything. I know its not software related. Its def something hardware, I have done way too many tests on software.

Well it could still be CPU usage, so OC your CPU more and see if it improves.

Really don't see how your mobo could be the issue. RAM could be run at wrong speeds, but asume you checked that.

Ive sucessfully OCed to 4.4 and it did nothing in regard to framerate.

Are there  still suggested things we mentioned like the switch DX versions etc you can try?

Pls do a sum up of all things you have tried, since you keep insisting it's not software.

Has nothing to do with DX version. Tried and Tested.

Plz do keep in mind I have had this problem for nearly 10 months. I can do my best to summarize what I have tried.

OCed CPU tons of times along with running stress tests through AIDA 64.

Ran CPU validation tests with Intel software and talked to them about both CPUs I tried and they assured me they were 100% fine.

Have run custom graphics settings set in .ini and .cfg files along with in game settings to assure that the game is not limiting itself or any components. (This a brief summary)

Tested the Graphics card in 3DMark and Heaven benchmark to make sure the GPU is fully functional and talked to EVGA to confirm the specs.

Reset the Operating System (Windows 10)

Unparked CPU cores.

Tested multiple CPU affinity software to make sure the CPU was not focusing on background processes while gaming.

Run tests in Safe Mode to assure the previous step as well.

Unplugged everything and run tests.

Run DXDiag tests and sent them to people who diagnose them.

There is probably much more than this but frankly I cannot remember it all. Not to mention all the things I have tried hardware wise.

I'm just Gona ask because I've seen the mistake made before:

1-Is the HDMI plugged into the GPU not onboard graphics

2-is the CPU/GPU usage going up while gaming

3-is the 1080 in a x16 PCiE slot?

What is your graphic setting? I just look up GTX1080 playing BF4 on 1080p monitor. On ultra settings, the guy also only gets 90-110 ish FPS.

You friend with GTX970 could be running lower settings to get 200FPS.
