Hi, All!

I'm planning to buy a gaming laptop soon. My budget is $2k (before tax). The titles I play are as follows:

DOTA 2

Witcher 3

Guild Wars 2

Cities: Skylines

Overwatch

Rust

Civ 6

...and a LOT of old RTSs. I also do mild content creation.

The following things are important for me to have:

-some sort of i7. I'm not against a dual-core i7-7500U if everything else is amazing

-16gb of RAM

-some sort of pcie SSD

-at least 256gb storage (I really don't need more than 512 tops, though)

-dedicated graphics (ideally at least a 970M, and pascal GPUs would be nice)

-premium, aluminum construction (ideally a unibody)******** very important to me

-either a 13.9'', 14'', 15'', or 15.6'' display

-enough I/O for mouse, wireless headset, and one or two other peripherals.

-ethernet would be nice, but not absolutely necessary

-thin, portable form factor

-keyboard with good tactile feedback and decent key travel.

The following things are less important to me:

-graphics settings (I'm happy to crank down to high graphics settings instead of ultra for thermal reasons, but would generally prefer to stay away from min graphical settings)

-resolution (1080p, 1440p, and 3200x1800 are all fine by me, but 4k seems overkill on such a small screen)

-touchscreen (neat, but not super useful to me)

-trackpad (nice to have a good one, but i'll be using a mouse 70%+ of the time)

Thoughts?

It's mostly these two points that make it hard to recommend anything. *cough* the only unibody aluminum is Razer, but because it's built so thin, everything overheats to shit. Even fat Alienware's on stock are really close to throttle points (this is the 15in new one).

The "best" thin and light would be something like the GS63VR. Has an aluminum construction. GL502 comes to mind, but that's shit on Pascal. P650RS also comes to mind but it's about as thick as an Alienware.

tl;dr

GS63VR (repaste required)

P650RPP6 (repaste recommended)

AW15R3 (repaste recommended)

just stop, already shot you down in another topic. Also do you really think it is a smart idea going around saying that you got someting tax free?

Your experience in the past may just be a one-off thing, if it happened the last time does not mean it will definitely happen again.

get from http://www.hidevolution.com/ instead, they are prema partners, so all the bios flaws with normal clevo laptops are gone.

build quality...?

if you didn't know, Clevo has some of the best motherboards and most likely what you think is build quality (the body) is okay, but build quality is every single part inside of a laptop and there clevo is above average. So you get decent build quality, good support and preme bios.

if support is really good then you honestly don't need to worry a lot about build quality, unless you are like me, carrying your laptop from the screen and dropping it down on a table, if you do that, then you should only look a business class laptops

I wasn't asking, I was disagreeing with you. I've found their build quality to be quite poor.

are you one of thos guys that just say the build quality is bad because it feels "cheap". Let me just explain build quality to you. The body is only a very little part of build quality and a plastic body can be more durable than a aluminum body, just look at older ThinkPad's, but if a body is put poorly together (apple and razer, cheap screws and cheap glue) then the build quality goes down a lot, but if they use high materials to put the body together, like high quality screws, high quality glue, then the build quality goes up. Then we have all the parts inside, if you think all motherboards in laptops are equal in quality then you are stupid, clevo has some of the best motherboards I have laid eyes on, way better than what razer has. You need to check every single part in a laptop to find out the build quality, just like you do in a desktop.

a plastic body is also more likely to keep your hardware safe, because if you drop it hard enough then the plastic will break off in that area and that will reduce the shock, while a aluminum body would bend and transfer almost the whole shock to the rest of the parts and if you are unlucky then that bend could fry something.
