Creating a NAS (Motherboard/CPU Question)

I'm no expert, but that is very overkill for a NAS. I'd reccomend buying a skylake i3 or lower end i5 along with a b150 or similar motherboard. Potentially you could sell the parts you have now to get some extra cash (if you dont have anything else to do with them).

You would be better off selling those parts off, picking up an h110 mobo and a g4400, and pocketing the delta, because those parts barely matter in a nas.

That's odd, the only thing i can think of is that your pricing might be too high.

I'm selling my board for 390 and it retails for 600. Any ideas where to sell that's trust worthy. I tried ebay but nothing so far.

My guess is that's your problem. Anyone who's willing to waste money on an unnecessarily high end board will probably want to buy new.

(I'd take a brand new $150 X99 board over a used ($390) $600 X99 board any day).

It's really not worth selling it then. Might as well use it for my NAS setup.

That's the problem, higher end boards will appeal to less people. It's really only worth getting a high end board IMO if you plan to keep it for a long time, it will devalue very quickly compared to mid range boards. $390 for a used mobo is still high end money and with no warranty to speak of it's a big gamble for someone to make.

Anyway, no worries, if you can't sell it for enough money to make it worth your while do as you said and have a higher end hardware NAS, at least until you either find a buyer for it or find a better use for it... I think you could probably find a better use for it, like maybe a renderer as well as a NAS for when you want to use your main system for gaming or whatever.

Either way the answer is yes you can make a NAS from those parts just a s easily as you could from any other hardware really, it's the software side more than the hardware that makes a good NAS. What software/OS are you thinking of using for it?
