Yes.

no i dont think its motherboard dependant, just wanted to double-check the specs to confirm

Why would you need to know the motherboard specifications for this particular question? It's a question that can be applied for any motherboard that would have SATA express connector/connectors.

(That is if it is the case that it's connector dependent rather motherboard dependent. )

Yes, you can use the SATA ports of the SATA express ports fine, if you look at your mobo specs it'll usually say soemthing like 6 SATA ports, and on inspection of the mobo you'd find 4 actual SATA ports plus the SATA express ports which have another 2.

Here, if you have a look at my mobo  http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming-ITXac/

it says 6 SATA ports, if you look at the board it has 4 SATA ports separate from the SATA express port that has an additional 2.

So, I was wondering about SATA express. Are those 3 ports only limited for SATA express, or can I use the 2 SATA ports for their own each individual connectors as well?

SATA Express is backwards compatible with SATA 6Gbps. You can plug in two SATA drives into a SATA Express port.

You asked about the SATA express ports, so I was pointing out how they are listed in the mobo specs.

Just to be clear, those 2 drives would be recognized as their own separate drives, right? Like, it wouldn't be recognized as a single storage device, right?
