like intel cpu name p3 p4 ect ect

how does the naming work with gpu's numbering to know what order they are made and the next gen of the previous model. like is the 970 and the 1070 is the new version of it

i know like FTW SSC names are just the OC versions but want to understand how the number works so i know what to look for why shopping for one

currently have evga gtx 950 FTW 2gig and want to even just upgrade to the next level or even then following one if i can afford it

For Nvidia:

The first number is the series (9 series, 10 series) while the second two are the tier (50, 60, 80 Ti, 30)

The lower the first is, the older it is. The lower the second is, the worse the GPU is. Usually, each generation lags one tier behind another one.

(GTX 780 = GTX 970 = GTX 1060)

10XX is the current series. A series being the generation it's on.

There will NOT be any GPU's made by Nvidia that go past this.

1080 being the best consumer card right now, 1070 being the step below, and so on to 1050 which is the lowest of the bunch.

Nvidia sticks with a number as a series, 10 being the current series they're on. 80 being the top end, 50 being the low end. In the 900 series they had the 980Ti being a step above the 980, but not enough of a step to justify calling it the 990.

AMD I'm not too familiar with but now with the RX line they are following suit. RX480 being the best one, then down to RX460.

The direct upgrade to the 950, the 1050, will release on 11/5, and will be a slot power only card. The next step up, the 1050ti, will be releasing on the 10/28, and will be a faster version of the 1050 with more vram. The rule of thumb with Nvidia naming, is that the first one or two numbers (as in 9 in 960 or 10 in 1060) is the generation number, and the second number (50,60,70,80) is the power tier of the card, with 50 being budget and going up from there. Also, the ti suffix stands for titanium, and can be thought of as the uprated or more powerful version of the standard model.

Generally speaking the first number (7/9/10) indicates the generation. The following number indicate superiority within a generation (i.e. gtx 970 is better than a 960). However this DOES NOT indicate relative performance or translate across generations. For example the gtx 1070 beats out the 980ti by a significant margin. Find the cards in your price range and look up benchmarks on youtube/the wider internet, card names are just marketing bullsh*t not a tool to assist the consumer.

This is a list of what GPUs that replaced other GPUs.

750 -> 950 -> 1050 (low end)

750ti -> ? -> 1050ti (low end)

760 -> 960 -> 1060 (medium)

770 -> 970 -> 1070 (high end)

780 -> 980 -> 1080 (high end)

780ti -> 980ti -> ?? (enthusiast)

The first number says something about the generation, the last two numbers says something about performance. So a card starting with a 7 is older than a card starting with a 9.

Then we have the performance number (50, 50ti, 60, 70, 80, 80ti) a 780 would performe about the same as a 960/970 and you can basically say that when a new generation of GPUs come out then your GPU move one or two performance tiers down. This is not always true, but it makes it somewhat easier to understand.
