Hey all,

 

I need some help from you guys :D

 

A friend asked me if I can help him by choosing the right parts for his build.

 

He told me that his goal is to work 95% of the time with vm´s that should run all kinds of database and networking stuff (db2, oracle, elo etc.).

 

He uses this software setup at work (IT support) but he has no experience on the hardware side.

 

What we figured out is that he want to run around 4-6 VM´s at a time with medium workload and needs min 6gb Ram per VM (6*6 = 32GB so we ended up with 64gb of RAM total for his system.

 

I thought that in this scenario a xeon processor is the better choice cause of the higher corecount so that he can assign more cores to a vm and cause he don´t need a high clockspeed per core.

 

I´m no beginner in building computers but I never get in touch with Xeon processors and ECC ram. I know what the difference are but I don´t no which Xeon makes sense and I have no overview over the available models as well as the related motherboards.

 

The rig that is consider until now looks like this:

 

64gb Ram

4x 250gb SSD

1-2x 1TB HDD for long time storage (maybe WD Red´s cause his pc is running nearly 24/7)

1x used GTX 560 ti (a already have one from an old rig and he don´t need a good GPU and if he decide that he needs more later on a gpu is easy to upgrade)

Putting money into a cpu make more sense then in a GPU that he woun´t use. 

 

200-250 for case and PSU

 

Processor ?  (high core count needed :D )

 

The budget for that whole PC is around 2000-2500 Euro (2150-2650 us dollar)

 

Can you recommend a good CPU on the xeon side or 6-10core i7 side?

Okay so, I recommend at least a 10 core xeon, E5 2630L v4, that's $700 USD, if you want to add $500 to the price you can get a 12 core. But really, with hyper threading youll have 20 cores already. If you apply 2 cores per VM youre only using 10-12 cores, which leave your hyper threaded cores (or physical cores depending how you config it)

 

Motherboard will be an ASUS WS-E motherboard which adds another $500 USD. 

 

an EVGA Supernova 650 PSU, $100 USD.

 

Seeing how SSI CEB is the same size as E-atx, with the exceptions of a couple of mounting holes that DO NOT line up (check those stand offs!!!!) the Corsair Carbide Series 400Q, $99, would be pretty good for you. 

 

I would also go with ECC memory. 

 

Also, pick a larger drive instead of having a bunch of drives unless its necessary. Samsung SSD's are pretty good, look into them, the motherboard I chose has an M.2 drive for ultra fast SSD storage if you want to spend more on a good M.2 drive. 

 

Also I used USD for prices as that's all I had to work with since I'm in the United States, but the parts will be the same, prices should only be different. If you have extra money you can bump up the processor or get extra memory, or just grabs some beers and call it a day. Just remember, the motherboard is CEB, which is the same physical size however a few of the mounting holes wont line up, so check the standoffs and remove what won't line up. Also, add the processor and RAM before you install the motherboard, as without the few standoofs the board is more prone to flexing. There arent a lot of cheap cases that support CEB so your options are limited to E-atx cases and taking out standoffs

Seems like something like a dual socket 2011 board second hand E5-2670 so you get rougly 16 true cores! yes that is these also have 16 threads so 32 threads in total!
