New to pc building. i want to be able to game in 1440p and i was wondering if it would be worth it to get a MSI GTX 1080 Gaming Z instead of a Gaming X?

You are able to game at 1440p with a gtx 1070 just fine, no need to get a 1080.

 

EDIT: If you still want a 1080, I would get the cheaper version, there will be very incremental performance boosts between the two.

You're confusing. I just looked at the majority of those vendors cards (the GTX ones, non special editions) in the techpowerup GPU database and saw no red ones.
