So, college freshman, had to write an informative speech, chose computer hardware. There's a five minute limit, and I chose what I considered to be the most important parts, I'm aware I left out a ton of stuff, like selecting the right case, safety when building, ssds or hd, but I couldn't believe how long it was getting lol. If you have any corrections you see let me know, and tell me what you all think, all constructive criticism welcome. & funny memes. I like funny memes.

Computer Hardware: Why Build?

INTRODUCTION

1.      GAIN ATTENTION: Roughly 95% of people who own a computer purchased it pre-assembled.

a.       The average mark up on prices? Over 30%!

                                                   i.      Buying a 1,000$ computer from a retailer? Sorry to say, you’ve wasted 300$

b.      Imagine going in to a restaurant, ordering a thousand dollar meal, knowing you could have spent almost half as much, made it better, and known if there was anything wrong with it.

2.      INTRO THE TOPIC: But, building a computers difficult isn’t it?

a.       Building a computer is so easy, there are seven year olds that know how.

b.      Why don’t more people build computers then?

                                                   i.      Simple answer, retailers don’t want you too. Think of how devastating it would be to a company that only sells prebuilt computers.

1.      Take Alienware, a for example, if more people knew that could get that cool Alienware look & high performance for almost half the price, they’d go out of business.

c.       Building a computer not only gives you a sense of accomplishment, but the comfort that when something goes wrong, you’ll be able to fix it, as opposed to bringing it in to BestBuy, paying for a service fee and for the parts.

3.      ADDITIONAL TOPIC INFO: Computer building is not a recent trend.

a.       Large scale personal computer building in the way we know it today has been around for more than ten years.

b.      When I was young about eight myself, my brother replaced his graphics card in his computer.

c.       Upon interest in gaming and buying a new computer, I recalled this memory, and my love of computer hardware and building took off.

THESIS STATEMENT: Today what I’m going to share with you is information on computer parts, how to know what parts are right for you, and how to put it all together.

Internal Preview: Let’s start by taking a look at the typical hardware in a computer.

BODY

1.      When building a computer there are six components.

a.       The four main components are the, cpu, gpu, ram, and motherboard.

                                                               i.      The cpu, or central processing unit, is where all the heavy lifting in your computer is done.

ii.      The gpu or graphic processing unit, is what makes everything look beautiful.

iii.      The ram or random access memory, is what your cpu uses to help it process things, like opening Facebook.

iv.      Your motherboard, is exactly what it sounds like, it’s the mother to all these components, and it’s what everything is inserted into or connected to.

b.      The remaining two parts, are you power supply and your storage solution.

Transition: Now that you know what parts go in to the computer, I’ll share with you, on how to select the right parts for you, based off what you need, because remember, computer building, is all about servicing your own needs, for a cheaper price, and higher quality.

2.      Selecting your computer parts is a simple process, right?

a.       According to overclockers.net, there is over 6 to the 19th power of combinations for parts.

                                                               i.      Don’t let this intimidate you, with a little understanding that number goes right out of the picture.

b.      First you have to ask yourself, are you building a computer for browsing, gaming, media, or general use?

                                                               i.      Browser only use, it makes more sense to just buy a 200$ chrome book.

ii.      Gaming, where you put most of your money into the gpu and cpu.

iii.      Media breaks down to two groups

1.      Audiophiles, people who love good music, generally buy a sound card.

2.      Media editors usually buy a high performance graphics card as well as a media card to help with drawing and editing, and buy better ram.

iv. General use, or the most common computers, are able to do all three functions at a decent rate, while not excelling at any.

c.       When you’ve figured out what type of computer you’d like to build all that’s left is a little due diligence on pcpartpicker.com a website which will let you select the parts you need and monitor the prices for you, weighing the against different competitors.

Transition: Now that you know the four directions to go in when selecting parts for a computer, I’ll explain the process of building a computer.

3.      There’s no specific order that you’re required to follow when assembling your computer, but there is a general consensus on the way to do it.

a.       According to TomsHardware.com there is five step process to doing it.

                     i.      Step one – gather your cpu, ram, and motherboard then slide the cpu and ram into the appropriate slots.

ii.      Step two – Mount your motherboard inside your computer case using the screws given to you.

iii.      Step three – Insert your graphics card(s) or audio cards.

iv.      Step four – Put your storage in the storage bay and put your powersupply in.

                     v.      Connect all the wires to the motherboard, and you’re done!

CONCLUSION

I SUMMARY: Today you’ve learned what parts go into a computer, how to choose what parts are right for you, and a general process on how to install the components.

A, ENDING REFLECTION: I hope you now know more about computer hardware, computer building, and the benefits that come with doing this.

II FINAL THOUGHTS: The 5% will continue to grow, and I hope you’ll be among them.

I couldn't said it any better

To what kind of group is this speech for? If it's for people that are new to the computer world, I recommend talking at a slow level so that people can understand it much better.

I don't think that you can cramp more information than what you currently have (If you have time left add the SSD and HDD), but I like it how you mentioned the most important things and explained what these hardware are and how to build a pc in short.

Watch out, there might be ninjas out there

People who range from stupid to smart, with a few tech savy people thrown in. I'll be speaking at around 150wpm, seeing as how its 900 words long, and max length is 5 minutes. If I some how find myself short of time, I'll just thrown that in at the end. & I appreciate the feedback.

I think an extra thing to add to completely nail it would be to talk about why it might be better to buy a prebuilt in certain scenarios.

Well, I SORT of touched on that in the browsing, but I generally frown on prebuilts, so I'm a little bias on it. What scenarios are you referring to?

Older people who just want a computer to browse the internet on, or just somebody that wants to play flash games. Since people like HP and Lenovo get their parts cheaper they can build very low end machines cheaper than we can build them.

I'll make sure to remember this if I find myself short on time :)
