My useless powerful rig !! :(

Hi Linusers,

As this is my 1st post and I'm lucky to find this section on Linus to show off my suffer. I've built my rig last year which I'm not really satisfied enough regardless what's in it as it suppose to give the best it could. I'm a big fan of Flight Simulator and what I've done was all dedicated to it. I've decided to go for a monster PC level to please my fantasy but unfortunately I got disappointed with the results it gave me. I transformed from my elder PC which got a 1GB RAM and 1.6 CPU with a 128 built-in GPU to the following one:

- 3.2 Gh.z intel i7 CPU

- 8GB RAM G.Skill

- 1 Eyefiniti 5x series GPU with a 2GB memory

- 128 GB SSD

- Sniper Motherboard

- Cooler Master Tower with Silent Gold power supply.

I expected a major jump in the graphics and FPS but the difference was really slight. I used to get 10.1 FPS on my old rig and 15 FPS on the new rig. Any ideas what would be going wrong ??

You really didnt tell us a whole lot about your setup. Not sure which graphics card your using but it sounds like a radeon 4000 or 5000 series card? Both are older cards, expecially if you are trying to run a modern game.
it's Eyefinity 6 HD 5870 :)

If you're talking about FS2004 by M$, then you're in for trouble as this game has poor code that doesn't apply much task on the gpu, it rather throw everything on the cpu. That means, if you could overclock your cpu, THEN you will see improvement. However, getting 10-15 fps is possible with a good setup because the game is so unoptimized, you must run through a special optimization tool that makes a config.ini for you. Only then, you could possibly get good fps, even with your cpu not overclocked. So, basically go ahead and get that optimization tool. It's the first thing to try.

I'm currently using FSX but thanks a lot for the valuable information. I'll try it out and write down my experience :)

I meant FSX, not 2004. Sorry. :)

When Microsoft made FSX, they thought cpus are going to get faster in the future and based their main code on cpu usage. In reality, cpus turned into multiple cores and didn't become faster, hence why you're not getting a major fps improvement. So like I said, you need to fix the game settings. Just google for fsx optimization tool and you'll find it. After using it, you should get proper fps and if that's not enough, then you can overclock your cpu. Overclocking to 4.5 ghz can give a nice boost. On Youtube, I've seen couple videos of people running FSX with their cpu overclocked to 5 ghz, well that's nice but maybe a tad extreme and unnecessary.

I've been reading recently on some other forum which explained exactly what's goin on behind the stage in FSX process as it works with a single core CPU in a high clock speed which process less in the 2nd core, Mine is quad core which happens to be useless, in this case I should get a dual core processor and over clock it. On the other hand my GPU is not compatible with FSX as Microsoft recommends nVidia instead as it's optimized for a better AA process. Although, DDR3 4GB minimum is recommended. Hope it helps who's looking to build an FSX rig & thnx a lot for the help.
