Hi I'm building a computer for my coach, he's a pretty "hardcore gamer" and likes over the top stuff so I put a 1080 in there.

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/7n9R4C

he currently plays on a laptop with a 980m and a hard drive. I'm not sure what CPU he has but I'd say it's average like a 4690k or something. He'd like a "faster" computer so I put in a ssd to make it feel that way.

Notes: I'm not too sure about if the power supply is enough, and he would also eventually like to stick another 1080 with sli so again I don't really know wether or not I'll need a bigger psu.

The price of the total computer can be +/- $100 or so and I'm open to criticism. I have experience building computers and would love to learn more with this build.

*Its also noted he wants to play VR

Thanks

Snip

Get a cryorig H7 cooler, its better and better looking and only a couple bucks more (usually around 35 bucks)

Get the Z170HD3P. its about 5 bucks more than the HD3, but comes with USB C connector.

Do not get the NEX PSU. its highly overpriced for its mediocre quality. get an EVGA G2 or Corsair RMX unit IMO. 500W-550W is all you need.

1.1TB ssd is a stupid idea, 250gb ssd + 1-2tb HDD is what you want (Also a lot cheaper)

That isn't true at all. Sure it may be more cost effective to go that route, but having a 1TB SSD is beneficial for those who always want speed and have the budget to work it into a build. for example i'm currently saving up to have 1TB of NVMe storage in my next upgrade simply because I want that speed for windows navigation and game loading screen times. its alot more money but its what I want so its what i'm going to do.

On a $1600 spending $250 on an ssd is stupid, if your running a 6800k and 2 1080's go for it, but on a pc like this one wasting that much for marginally better game loading times is just stupid

its only about a $125 difference between a 1TB SSD and a 250+1TB setup. when you're spending 1500+ bucks on a system, that really isn't all that much money. He already has the best CPU and GPU that a consumer gamer should be buying, its not like that 125 can really go anywhere else to any practical performance benefit. (maybe a better motherboard)

I'm not saying you're wrong, I myself bought a 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD for my build (which I regret). There is certainly some appeal to it and for a lot of people its the way to go, but to say that its "stupid" or wasteful simply doesn't tell the whole story. I personally don't like HDD's at all anymore (but I also have no use for mass storage, for music or movies or whatever), and he could be in the same boat.

1 - don't buy windows, just make installation media and buy a key from kinguin/amazon/g2a

2 - if he likes over the top stuff ( and if he's doing intense gaming ) i'd get an AIO liquid cooler or atleast a higher-range air cooler so you can overclock that to  4.5Ghz+

3 - Also, just 8gb? not very balanced dude, an i7 6700k + 1080 should have 16gb to go with it.

4 - also, change psu to an corsair RM or g2

CPU Cooler: Thermalright Macho X2 Limited Edition CPU Cooler  ($59.99 @ Amazon) for OC headroom

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($74.99 @ Newegg) some games seem to need more than 8gb for gaming.
Storage: Intel 600p Series 256GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive  ($96.99 @ SuperBiiz) this and a 2tb hdd will be better for storage IMO, store OS here.
