it will decrease performance or reliability .

Not really. If anything, a single stick of RAM has less of a chance to fail than 2 sticks. Also, performance won't change, for the most part.

can i use 1 8gb 2400mhz ram stick with a dual channel mother board or 4 ram slot motherboard . Motherboard:- MSI B150 GAMING M3 .

In performance 2 X4 would be better as it will use both memory channels but any improvement would be minimal and any improvement would only be observable in benchmarks.

As to reliability one stick has half the chance of going wrong than two sticks (another tick in the just use 1 X 8 box).

If you already have the 1 X 8 use that with the knowledge that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.

Using 2x4gb ram will provide dual channel over using 1x8gb stick which provide single channel. In real world scenario there is not much difference in performance, however in case of integrated graphics, whether it's Intel HD graphics or AMD APUs graphics, dual channel is a benefit as integrated graphics use ram as a storage for graphics, therefore dual channel means increased bandwidth and hence speed improvement in gaming.
