Upgrading gpu from GTX 760

Go to solution Solved by aisle9,

I'd suck it up and buy the 480 8GB, to be brutally honest. Your 4460 won't hold it back at all. Buying an old mobo so you can buy an old card and SLI them just means you're now stuck with two old cards that will be unable to keep up soon enough, and that you'll have a very hard time selling at a reasonable price. A 480's a bit pricier up front, yeah, but if/when you do upgrade to a new CPU and chipset, you'll have a graphics card ready to roll.

I have 2 choices that currently deciding:

1. Get another cheap 760 and SLI

2. Replace this 760

1. I need a new mobo. Haswell is quite old gen so getting a used one won't be an issue. Even cheap ones that has SLI support won't be that much. Reason is my current mobo does not support SLI.

Also a new PSU. 760 in SLI is very power hungry. Maybe some Seasonic S12II or CXM.

Lastly I need to hope there will be enough room for 2 cards in my case and i5 4460 won't be that of a bottleneck even though games I play are not cpu demanding (except cs go and minecraft which seems to be cpu intensive but I have no problems with them anyway).

But still the cost of it in total is not that high actually. Let's say cheap 50 cad mobo + 100 cad 760 and a 100 cad psu in total if my math is correct you should get 250+ cad (still less than a new 480 or 1060)

760 in SLI performance wise is pretty good (looking at benchmarks). Games can pull at max with decent frame rate

Anyway can I sli with another 760 if my card is a weird 192 bit 760? I am aware SLI is possible with same gpu but this is technically a bit different one from regular 760 with different VRAM and clock speed.

2. I can get RX 470 or 480 since they are cheapest.

Can't find similar benchmarks so went with Firestrike. 480 beats 760 sli a bit

Chepeast 480 (8GB) starts at 330 and 4GB at 300 CAD. I am pretty sure there is no used card.

So option 1 or 2? All the games I run (at least to my knowledge) support SLI.

I'm going to go find a blue GTX 1060 or RX 480, brb.

And remember, if you upgrade and don't SLI you can sell the old 760

Not this time. I am on budget. I can paint it if I want

Well, how much can you sell the 760 for?

I don't know. And I don't know if I want to. Ebay selling most 760 for around 100 CAD.

Well, if you did you could get either of these:

Both of which could be painted nicely

My case has no side panel though. But maybe I might sell my 760 and get an upgrade instead

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

well if the case has no side panel window, color does not mater, does it? Unless you plan on upgrading your case soon.

Or a 1060 6GB, but that's besides the point. Why bother upgrading half your components to SLI when just selling the GPU and replacing it will get more performance in the end?

I went through the same thing with my 970, whether to get a 1070 or buy another 970.

Don't forget to get one with a backplate though, so you can paint it blue.

You can buy blue backplates from third parties, like V1 tech or Coldzero
