Hey,

I am looking to build a new pc that can act as a workstation as well as a gaming rig. I was also wondering if I could set it up so that I can use it from school using a laptop (neither the laptop nor the internet will be very fast). I recently put together a parts list after doing extensive research, but as I was about to put the money into building it, in true #pcgamerproblems new, much cooler, more efficient hardware came out. I don't think I will be needing a Xeon because the work I will be doing on it will not be very precise, but I want to see if I can set the system up with newer components to put in a 7th gen intel processor, and expandable as possible. I had the 'Godlike gaming" motherboard on my other build sheet and it would be helpful if someone could tell me if there will be a 2016 or even 2017 edition to look forward to, although I would like to put the system together as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Here is a link to the machine I was planning to build (prices were different before):

Here is the pcpartpicker link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/y9LhgL

Remember I want to start a new build entirely these are just old builds that I put together a while ago.

Why use a second tier 1000W PSU with semi-modular cabling?
You can cut the cost down with selecting a 750-850 first tier PSU (with full modular cabling).

Less costly, way more effective, and can still maintain stable overclock across all component. Even it can easily adapt to a future SLI upgrade.....

Well, I will definitely change that, if I get newer components the rig would require much lower wattage.

are there any specific PSUs that you would recommend?

I hate to come off as a dick but this PC seems to be the definition of wasteful spending.

-Why do you need a $500 motherboard when you'll likely never use any of its additional features?

-Why the overpriced ($770) Founder's Edition card that'll run hotter than most non-reference cards?

-Why the 10TB NAS drive? How much storage do you actually require?

-You don't need a i7 6850K. Just get the i7 6800K.

-You don't need 64GB of RAM. Dominator Platinums are overpriced for what they are.

-You don't need a 1000W power supply.

-Where's your cooler?

I suggest getting a more cost efficient rig that won't sacrifice performance and pairing it with a high-end monitor.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

I agree this biuld looks more like someone who lapsed the highest priced components together

I fixed many of these issues with my pcpartpicker list, I found that I would use many of the features of the motherboard, and on top of that, it had a very useful interface. I like the Dominator Platinums because of some of the reliability that they have proven to have, and I think that the 6700k is a lot better for the money than the 6800k, so that is another change (I am also asking about changing the rig almost entirely). The PSU does need to be changed, I agree with that, I have a cooler in the pcpartpicker list if I remember correctly. I need the 64gb of ram because I am going to be running quite a few VMS for my business, and 3D Printer. The 1080 founders edition was also much cheaper at the time I made this build. The NAS drive is now unnecessary because of some upgrades I have made in other computers. I am thinking more of a 1tb SSD and maybe 4tb HDD (I go through a lot of storage with backups and games).

the motherboard you plan to get is a 2011 socket type motherboard. a i7-6700k is a 1151 socket type cpu. They are not compatible. If you want to go with an X-series motherboard you're looking at a i7-6800k or higher.

Yea, I would have to change some things but the point of this post is to make a system to accommodate the 7th gen processors that are to come.

If you're using this as a workstation, the i7 6800K would be a better choice assuming many of the programs you use are multithreaded.

RAM is often reliable so the Dominator Platinums don't particularly 'stand-out' in that regard. The only reason to go for them is for the aesthetics and I tend to avoid them since they're ultimately overpriced for what they're actually worth.

I run a few virtual machines and find that 32GB is enough. If you feel you need 64GB is what you need, then I'm not stopping you.

Otherwise, the rest of your changes sound good.

Here's something I put together. It will support a second 1080 if you need that for certain rendering tasks, or you can downgrade to something like 750 or 850W if you know you wont be going with a second GPU anytime. The case is a little hard to pick because the motherboard you selected is EATX but I know the 750D has a very roomy interior and should easily fit this motherboard

That looks great, but should I wait for the new 7th gen hardware to come out, I am not sure if it would be worth it though.

IMO, no. For workstation use you'll benefit from the extra 2 cores that the 6800K/6850K have. I have a 5820K and use it for content creation as well as gaming and I love it, have yet to find a downside to id (besides it putting out a little more heat than a 4 core of course, thats expected though). intel's 7th gen (kaby lake) is based on the same fabrication process as Skylake and will likely see very little actual improvements (5%-10% max). With skylake/broadwell-e and the new Pascal from NVIDIA, now is a good time to build new computers. If this were say april earlier this year, it would be a "wait until pascal" or whatever

What meme?

Also, https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/ use it to find deals and make your PC a little cheaper.

Could also use jet.com and their codes for money off too. Once you get the max money off, place that order and start a new account and place another order. Save the 90 bucks and put that elsewhere in your build.

That sounds good, but if I ever post this on Reddit every comment will be an OP comment XD.
