Ps3 controller with PC USB problem

Hey guys

 

I'm having an issue with my PC. I tried to plug my ps3 controller in like I use to with my laptop to play games with and the front USB ports i got power surge warnings on my PC and the back ports as soon as i inserted the usb the pc shut off.

I'm guessing it was protecting itself or something. 

 

Any idea what's going on? Recommended next steps?

Different cable seems to have stopped the power surge warnings but im not seeing any drivers installing or even attempting to install

Nevermind... apparently the driver already exists. So weird about the other cable though. I guess it was damaged.

Yeah, sounds like the cable was shorting. I'd throw it away asap to avoid accidentally trying to use it again

thanks for the advise, I forgot i had a 2nd one. I must have brought it because the first one broke but i completely forgot

I've had this happen many times , which is why I left the previous comment

What software do you recommend to connect it? I heard motioninjoy has adware so i've ditched that. Need a replacement

That's actually what I used, hadn't had any ad issues though
