so I like to stream Minecraft and I was thinking of making a server for the my  followers. And I already have a server that I play with with a couple friends and family and one of the members does not want to do it because of security. what are the risks and if there are any of making a server public to people that watch my streams and I would obviously only be adding people have been around for a while

I mean, depending on their dedication someone might try to DDOS you but a) chances are slim and b) you can try to protect yourself against that. Otherwise no network vulnerabilities as long as you set up your ports correctly.

How do you ensure that it is secure?

Honestly after looking into it you're probably better off getting a professional company to host it if you really care about DDOS protection. I would just self host and if it becomes a problem then look into a host that could provide such protection.
