First time builder help - Mahalo-

Aloha Builders,

 

First time noob here, and I would like to ask the awesome Linus community to help me with pointers.
I’m planning on building my first build and buy parts during December (or if they can be bought on a sale), when/if any of them will have a good price.

• I’m located in Hawaii, so items should come from Amazon with Prime shipping to save some moolah.
• I’m planning on buying in two steps, first the PC, then a new display, because I would like to go 4K. The main reason for this is because I do a decent amount of video editing and I already have the 4K gear.
• I also like to game, BUT I’m not an FPS fan, more of a strategy/RPG guy. For gaming, I like the AAA titles as well as oldies but goldies (Like Planescape torment…) and since I’m planning on 4K editing I will need a powerhouse.
• I don’t care at all about colors, LED lights and whatnots. I do care however about noise so I’m looking for a closed case. I live in a flat, that has no AC, and the temperature is around 86-90F which will be important later when we are talking about cooling.
• Finally the budget. I’m thinking around $2,000 (+10% if really worth the investment).
• I am not planning to do any massive overclocking, I’m too lazy for that (just let the factory program run an overclock and leave it at that).

 

My initial idea:

- Will the mem. cards fit under the cooler? / Will the mem cards be OK with this MOBO?

- How many addition fans and what size (Noctua) would you suggest for the build for a positive airpressure setup. 

- Should I keep my Soundblaster Audigy FX card or, the onboard audio will be able to drive my 250 ohm cans?

Power  - $150
Seasonic  750W ATX12V/EPS12V 80 PLUS Platinum Certified Full Modular Active PFC SNOW SILENT-1050

• 750 is sufficient right? I don’t plan to add another GPU or anything other, max another 5TB HD, but that’s a huge if)
• Emphasis on silent

 

CPU / $330:
Intel Core i7 6700K. I’m only thinking in intel processor, not an AMD fan. I read somewhere that intel is a bit better for rendering video, plus less heat.

 

Cooling:

 

CPU cooling $90: Noctua NH-D15 in push pull. Silent, and trusty. (I’m a stickler for Noctua, and air cooling so let’s stick with this or a newer model)

Fans for the case: Noctua 120 or 140s, how many would you suggest for a positive pressure build?

• Please consider the GPU hybrid’s extra fan in your build.
• As I said, I’m lazy, so I don’t think I would use a fan controller a lot, so we can skip that.

 

Case $120:
I was looking at the Fractal Design R5, which I like for the dust filters.

 Also at the Thermaltake F-51 Silent, because it is silent.

• Any case should have integrated dust filters that are easy to clean. The smaller, the better, but the case should have USB at the front panel. SILENT, and the smaller the better.

 

MOBO:
Up to you.

 

GPU / $750ish:
EVGA 1080 Hybrid – cooling and noise.

• This is something that I would like to keep fixed (I mean the 1080), however, you are more, than welcome to share your reasons why would you use a different version and not the hybrid.
• I’m an nvidia fan.
• Please consider noise levels

 

Memory $190:
Up to you, but it should fit under the Noctua. Minimum of 16GB for vid editing, 32 is preferred.

 

Drives:

 

For the Op system (Win 10):

1. I would like my op system to run on a PCIe M2 ssd. Two 120GB in RAID would be preferable. (I’ve seen these pcie cards that can handle two M2s and have some cooling on them, I was thinking about getting one of those) / but this is an extra.
   Though I can live with a good quality 240 SSD in a non PCIe port as well, if we need to cut down on cost. Maybe a MOBO that can use M2?
2. I already have a Samsung 850 PRO 240 GB that I would like to use as my TEMP game drive, and have the ADOBE suite running from here. At any one time, I have like 2-3 games on my PC so I think the size will be enough
3. I have an older 1TB Seagate that will be enough to store my other stuff. 5 years old. What do you guys think? Keep or replace (I keep my pics and other items on a couple of 2.5 externals)
4. For CD / DVD whatnot, I have a USB external BR drive which suits me fine, for the 3-5 times I use it in a year…

 

Soundcard:
I’m an entry level audio enthusiast. I have a Soundblaster Audigy FX card in my current PC that I would like to put into the new setup, so it can drive my 250ohm cans.

Please advise if the MOBO you have suggested has a good quality audio and will be able to drive my cans or if I need (or should) use my soundcard for the build for better audio quality.

 

Peripherals:
No keyboard, mouse whatnots. I also have a Dell monitor that I will be using (DVI) until I can get a new one.
Everything else is up to you.

 

IF I need extra cables and screws, noise dampening foam, and whatnot, please include in the suggestion.

p.s.: if you still have the IT mojo, I’d appreciate your suggestions on a new monitor. 4K.

i know its a tad over your max budget but my friend has a very similar system and does allt he same things that you do and does them with no issues

Can you by any chance ask your friend for a reference on how loud the build is when maxing it out on an AAA game or something?

Sitting next to it... does it feel, that there is a hoover going on next to you?
