A pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990s and a Schiit DAC would be a nice setup.

what is a DAC going to do without a amp? if you think nothing, then correct. Also why would you recommend getting a DAC at such a low budget, it makes no sense, the audio quality bump is way bigger with better headphones, than with upgrading a DAC and amp, unless there is something wrong with OPs onboard.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

If you have $250 for the sole purpose of audio then you might as well get one at this budget.

you must be joking right? That is just stupid. Lemme just buy 100-150$ headphones and then 100-150$  on a used Schiit DAC and amp. That combo would have NOTHING on a 200-250$ pair of headphones with decent onboard. Why would you even think that a DAC and amp would make a big jump in audio quality? If we start talking 500-600 then you might want to think about getting a DAC and amp, but 250$ that is just plain stupid, unless there is something wrong with your onboard.

At 250$ you have:

fidelio x2

K7xx

K553

MSR7

NAD VISO HP50

AD1000x (sometimes)

All of those headphones are good, but it comes down to what kind of sound you want
