Well after looking at your edit the 480 would kinda be a downgrade. ;) If you can find a 980 Ti cheap (like less than a 1070) it's a good buy.

I can buy a used one for around £260-£300 I could sell my 970 and get £130 for it so effectively I only pay 150 ish for it???

Cheapest 1070 I can find is £373 so it's definitely a better value. And a great upgrade.

I have 980Ti and 1070, and the two are for practical purposes the same performance, at least in older games. If you can find the 980Ti on sale it is worth consideration. There's the occasional fire sale where you might get them around £300 new and I wouldn't pay more than that for it. Low end 1070 is closer to £400 but they might have a bit more future resistance (and few new features) as well as lower power consumption. I'd say push for the 1070 if you can, 980Ti only if on a good sale, and below that is not worth the effort of switching from 970.

My step dad can get 20% back from VAT. So if I buy the 1070 for £380 (Make it round :)

If I sell my 970 for £150

And claim the 20% back which is (£76) in total I would have £226 I would only have to pay 154 for a 1070, seems a good price

Not looked at recent pricing but wonder if that might be a bit optimistic? I bought a new 970 a few months ago for £200 after cashback.
