What 650w psu?

Go to solution Solved by Ichi,

I won't really recommend 650W PSU. (Unless you're like me and got a $45 deal for a RM650x)

If you're running single GPU setup then 550W is more than enough.

SLI setup you're probably looking at 750W and above to be safe.

I know modern GPUs are getting more power efficient but I definitely won't run 1070 SLI on a 650W, that's just me.

But if 650W is cheaper or few bucks difference compared to a 550W then by all means get the higher wattage.

Of course this applies to PSU that is proven to be of great quality, stay away from garbage PSU, check out the PSU tier list.

To answer the question, Corsair RMx series are definitely quiet, you can't even hear them, that is if you can find a good deal for it as they tend to be on the expensive side.

but I hear they produce a lot of coil whine.

Well you heard wrong.

Coil whine cannot be predicted and no trend has been found that points to one or another model of PSU, or any other piece of technology, will make more noise than another. It's a rare ocurrence that seems more common than it is because of the higher tendency of the people who experience it to talk about it, compared to the people who don't, and is ultimately as far as we know, random.

In other words, get that EVGA G2 or if you want to get a Corsair RMx, that's also a fine PSU and is a bit more silent (and I mean, makes less fan noise). Even a 550W model will do just fine for a GTX 1070 and OC CPU (if you plan to SLI, by all means get the 650W or a RM750x since those are usually on sale).

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here
