Displayport Adapter Issues

Hey i recently acquired a 2nd tv and am having issues splitting the image I already have one tv thats hooked up to the HDMI port on my GTX 950 but i bought a displayport to HDMI adapter and when i go to plug it in it does not recognize it and doesnt even see it at all what can I do to resolve this?
