Hello all,

I'm thinking of upgrading my mobo. Main reason is my current one only supports 8gb and i am running out of memory when playing most games.

Current one is the standard built in mobo from Packard bell Ixtreme m5800. (for reference my current specs are i7 870, 8gb ram, gtx 750 ti)

New one: http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ProductDetail.aspx?T=motherboard&U=en-us0000500 (well its going to be second hand)

Same PCI, same cpu socket etc..

Now i have a few questions.

1. What do i need to do in preparation to upgrading the motherboard? I will be reusing all my components (gpu, powersupply, cpu etc)

2. Will this break my windows 10?

3. What do i do after installing the motherboard? (installation, boot up, etc..)

4. The new motherboard has 4 RAM slots (just like my current one) but the new one supports 4gb dimms. My current mobo is currently holding 4 2 gb ram sticks. Would it be okay if i run the 4 2 gb ram sticks in the new mobo until i can afford the 4x4 gb sticks?

If i missed any other important things about mobo's please tell me!

1. Make sure the motherboard fits your current case (I highly doublt it will since prebuilds are a mess.)

2. It will break your windows 10 if it is an OEM, those are bound to your motherboard.

3. After installing motherboard you should install windows if necessairy, then drivers for everything.

4. It supports 4 dimms, not 4GB dimms. You can run a total of 16GB RAM on it, but you don't have to. I would recommend checking that motherboards specifications and grab a few new sets of RAM sticks in total.

yea but that's not the problem

For instance i play fh3, and it runs out of ram after about 15 mins of playing, not to mention rust too..

What else are you running in the background and have you tried reinstalling windows? 8gb of RAM is enough for the vast majority (basically all but a few poorly optimized) of games.

Not much, really. when windows is just booted up it uses about 25% ram at max. It's just these new games are very demanding

1. It does fit my case (same form factor) and i upgraded this pc before so i should know.

2. This pc originally came with windows 7, not the current windows 10

3. Does this mean i'd lose my hard drive data?

4. So you're suggesting i can either run 4x4 gb or 2x8 leaving 2 dimms open?

  1. Good.
  2. I'm guessing you upgraded when it was free? In that case it might work to reinstall it. If you go to windows homepage and search for downloading ISO file for an OS you currently own it'll work if you can provide your windows key as proof.
  3. It's recommended that you backup windows on a seperate drive to make sure nothing happens to your files. It's not guaranteed.
  4. Precisely!

The original mobo that came with this board supports 8gb with 4 dimms, and it came with 4, so a few years ago i tried replacing all the sticks with just 1 8gb stick and it didnt work. So i'm not sure 2x8 will work, especially since all the internet info is conflicting

I know that, but that's the configurations you could put it in (which slots etc) and its kinda gibberish for me.

Usually you run 1/2/4 RAM sticks.

If you run one, put it in the one closest to the CPU on that mobo.

Let's call it slot 1.

If two sticks - plug them in to slot 1 and 3.

If four..? You'll figure it out ;)

The best way to go is ALWAYS a clean install.

Ok at this point i'll just do a clean install.

So, if i installed my new mobo, how would one go about installing windows 10 via a usb stick?

Also, would i keep my windows store purchases (like purchased apps&games)? Sorry for all these questions, i will literally cry if i lose something very important or expensive lol
