HDD Durabilty

Wolly9102

hi I need to take my laptop everyday with me to school. So the HDD has to take some punishment everyday. The HDD of my last laptop died within 2 years after buying (WD blue). it couldn't find the MBR this was also a schoollaptop.

the manufacture (acer) of that laptop repaired it and simply told me it was broken. Nothing more. my new laptop has also a WD drive in it. I am a bit paronoid that will die again within a few years. How could i extend the drive livespan as much as possible?

Get an SSD if you concerned about durability. Make sure you don't drop or hit your laptop causing sudden shocks. I like to treat my laptop like a baby (Legit) I wouldn't drop it or throw it (Yes I know people who throw their laptops)

i treat it with much care as i can. But my surroundings aren't :(do shocks matter when the drive is off? Because i can't prevent the shocks when moving from home to school and vica versa

If you do everything to make sure you don't physically give it a shock to break the platters or move the needle off, I don't think there is much else you can do! General wear and tear sucks

so that case of my acer HDD dying within 2 years was just a case of bad luck?

So how big does that shock need to be? I can't imagine repositioning my laptop when working would do any damage

Put it this way. I have killed 1 hard drive in my time

I dropped it on my SOFT bed and it cracked the platter, on the other hand I have also dropped my hard drive on concrete and it survived and still works to this day

You can break an HDD by punching the table your PC is on if you're unlucky, they don't really take punches well.

If not physical damage it's a 99% chance that it holds.

It doesn't withstand physical damage that good, some more than others.

The point is however to not harm them.

I wasn't intending to harm my drive :) just wanted to know if a schoolday is harmful to my drive. :) because you can't prevent all the shocks that my pc has to endure. ;)

Nah of course!

But keep in mind that laptops in school purposes are extremely normal things. And they don't break often, but an SSD is recommended anyways.

Unless it is a really huge one, probably not.
