Half Life 1

Half Life Opposing Force (expansion)

Half Life Blue Shift (expansion)

Half Life 2

Half Life 2 ep1

Half Life 2 ep1

If you do not enjoy Half Life 1, then feel free to skip the expansions and instead jump straight to the sequel.

Dont bother playing Half Life 1, play Black Mesa http://www.blackmesasource.com/ Community remake on the new Source engine, great game, oh and its free

But it's incomplete, latter levels are still missing.

I am going to start the series during my winter break when i have time. I downloaded and played like 2 mins of Black Mesa. How is that different than Half Life 1?

More specifically i hear about this Xen, what is that exactly? Also I heard that Black Mesa will be releasing that soon so i guess i could play it then huh?

It's the same game remade in the half life 2 engine. so better graphics and physics. Xen is just the last level of the game without going into much detail.

Play all of it. In this order

half life 1 (source edition if you can)

Blue shift

Opposing force

Half life 2

Half life 2: lost Coast

Half life 2: Ep1

Half life 2: Ep2

personally I think it's better if you play the proper versions as you get more from them and more of a sense of how it's improved and just what it's brought to the gaming industry in terms of story etc etc etc.

It's half life, jus-do-it! :)

Guys, I do not mind the horrible graphics on HL1 really.. I was just pointing that out..

I still play Quake III Arena up to date.. And it basically looks like cardboard glued together and painted to look like characters and maps... But I still love the hell out of that game!! :)

As others have said, Opposing Force and Blue Shift (The two official expansions for Half-Life), aren't necessary for the overall story.

However, I do recommend playing them. They are both quite good games. I really enjoyed the opening to Blue Shift in particular, as it mirrored Half-Life's opening but gave you a slightly different route. You play the guard who is knocking on the locked door as you ride by in the mag-train.

Decay, I believe, is the PS2 Half-Life game, yes? I don't even know if there is a PC port for it. I've never played it, and I'm not 100% sure if it's canon or not. Either way, Decay is a skip unless you have access to it and a bunch of free time.

I'd play them as follows:

Half-Life

Blue Shift

Opposing Force

Half-Life 2

Half-Life 2: Lost Coast (It may only be a tech demo, but it's really neat, and only like, 10 minutes long)

Half-Life 2: Episode 1

Half-Life 2: Episode 2

You could play Black Mesa (The Half-Life remake in Source) instead of Half-Life, but it doesn't have the Xen levels yet, as they are still being finished. If you did this, I'd recommend going into Half-Life and finishing the game from Xen on-ward, just for the complete experience. You could in theory watch a play-through of the Xen levels, but I think the mechanics are fun enough to just go ahead and play it.

Yeah, I did a little more research and found out that you are right.. It is a PS2 version of the game.. I have a PS2 lying around from back in the day.. So if I ever find it.. I will play it..

Opposing Force and Blue Shift aren't necessary for story(unless you want a different perspective).

Opposing Force puts you in the perspective of the military Gordan Freeman fights in the game. Blue Shift puts in the perspective of the guards in the lab that Gordan Freeman works in. Both provide outside perspectives of Half Life 1, but to me, they aren't necessary.

Lost Coast, like others have said, is a tech demo, it isn't necessary either. I don't know what "Decay" is? But I bet it isn't necessary either.

So, to reiterate;

-Half Life 1

-Half Life 2

-Half Life 2: Episode 1

-Half Life 2: Episode 2

That's the order in which you should play it in. If you really want to. There's a mod called "Black Mesa" which is Half Life 1 but it is redone using the Half Life 2 engine, so it looks much better, but I don't know if it's 100% done(last time I looked it wasn't done completely yet). So research a bit on that one if you really can't play HL1 with 1990 graphics :P

I will play all of them!!
