DSL

A lightening strike fried our work DSL modem, so we bought a new one to replace it. Just had to call Embark (our DSL ISP) to give them the numbers on the new modem and then during the modem setup use the old ID number (I forget the actual name for the number) to let it connect. Nothing too difficult and it was all documented in the stuff with the modem. Don't forget to turn in your ISP issued modem and make sure the rental fee is taken off your bill. Just make sure you're buying a modem that is compatible with the DSL connection of your ISP; call them to double check if you have any doubts. DSL and cable modems are different, so make sure it's a DSL and not cable modem you're buying.

Thank you for your reply. Is there any noticeable difference between an ISP issued one and a store bought one?

Not that I noticed. The modem my boss got is a modem/router, but we already have a router so I disabled the router functionality in the modem. Setup was easy, I changed the DNS servers to Comodo and haven't really encountered any problems. It's not a terribly fast connection to start off with, so any speed differences are pretty negligible. It's a pretty small business so we only really need it for checking emails, weather, basic stuff like that.
