GPU majorly overheating

Depends if it's software or hardware issue. Hardware issue could be GPU paste.

 

Software could be:

  • Outdated drivers
  • Wrong drivers (sometimes happens to people)

I grabbed an old gaming tower out of the trash for my friend to use when they were over and while setting up programs on it I noticed the GPU was running at 121C at idle . is this a software problem or the actual GPU Overheating? The card is a GeForce 6800 GT

Definitely a software issue. You're getting 121C on 0mV. At 0mV you would be at ambient temp.
