Hey peoples,

I am looking at getting a third monitor (currently have 2 Ben-Q 1080p 60Hz 1ms 27"s) and have seen 1440, 144hz 27" from a variety of companies but they have eaither FreeSync or G-Sync. I watched the LTT video on Free/G Sync and that showed what each does with the card brand made for it. My question is will a Nvidia card (1070) work with a 1440 144hz FreeSync (Adaptive Sync) monitor? I have googled it and I see replies varying from there is no Nvidia support of FreeSync, that it is highly hardware dependent (varies from card to card), or that it will work as good with FreeSync as G Sync. I am looking at the ROG Swift PG278Q, but am not looking foward to the $670 premium when there are FreeSync monitors with the same specs for under $500.

Also, if anyone knows of a G-Sync 27" 1440 144Hz monitor for less let me know.

Cheers.

You CAN use a freesync monitor, but not freesync itself

An Nvidia card will work with a FreeSync monitor, but the FreeSync functions will not work, so it would be like a regular monitor. Same as for an AMD card on a GSync monitor.

I would still get the 144Hz performance, right? I have seen some places say you will be locked at 60Hz if you don't have the matching card and I but I can't find any 144Hz 1440 monitors with neither G-Sync or FreeSync.

Yes, 144Hz will still work, just the adaptive refresh rate technology won't. 1440p 144Hz is where GSync and FreeSync are most useful, so most of the monitors with those specs have it. FreeSync doesn't really add any cost as it's part of the DisplayPort standard (technically VESA Adaptive Sync), but FreeSync can also have some support from HDMI, though I don't believe it's very common. Mostly, it's done through DisplayPort. Because of that, you're probably best going with a FreeSync monitor if you don't want to spend as much.

That being said, I think GSync is worth the extra cost (if you have an Nvidia card, of course) to get the benefits of adaptive refresh rates.
