Help with new build?

Trav_X

Okay okay, I said the last thread a week or two ago would be the last. No, this probably isn't either. I've literally been looking at what kind of PC to build for over 9 months now, basically since last Christmas. So let's do this.

Goal of build: record 1080p 60fps and 21:9 1080p 60fps gameplay (with OBS), edit said videos, also working in some animation, 3D modeling, and light CAD stuff for fun. I'll probably throw in some Folding@Home just to make myself feel better. In the budget I have, I could easily get a 6700k + 1070, or a 6600k + 1070, but I'd like the threads and cores since I'm not going to be doing just solely gaming. I'll only be recording and playing at 1080p and 2560x1080, so thinking a 6GB 1060 will be good. I'm not using ShadowPlay, so my GPU usage will solely be on games. I'll probably also do some Twitch streaming eventually as well. I don't play AAA titles, the hardest game I play is GTAV which already maxes out 60 frames Medium-High settings on a 970M in my laptop hooked up to the 2560x1080. A 1060 will work wonders at this resolution, in the games I'll be recording like Smite, CSGO, TF2, Rocket League, Payday, Minecraft, etc.

Please don't tell me to get a f***ing SSD. I honestly don't care, I've been using hard drives for a while and I'd rather spend my money on more storage then getting load times under 10 seconds. I don't care. I just boot my PC and I'm up in Windows in less than a minute anyways, so it doesn't matter. Maybe I'll upgrade in the future, but I could really care less when I'm trying to squeeze X99 into my budget. Also, the reason the 5820k is at $319.99 is cause MicroCenter sells it at that price constantly.

aesthetics aren't really important for me now. I already own an Orange 230T so I'll just use it. It'll be under my open air desk from IKEA, it's a sweet ass desk honestly but I can still see it if I want to but it's not like "on display" or anything like that.

Agree on SSD. My 5400rpm laptop with fast boot enabled boots in 5 seconds.

So far I see no problem

Ikr, my MSI laptop has a 7200 RPM drive that boots to the Windows 10 login screen in less than 15 seconds. And after I log in, my automatically opening programs like Discord, Steam, and CAM are all up in less than 30 seconds.

Slapped in a SSD and made it cheaper, SSDs don't just make your OS boot quicker, they make everything quicker and are amazing. You will not know till you get an SSD how much you like SSDs

could not agree more ;)

on the build ...

drop the 212 EVO, if you OC it won't do you any good - get a bigger better cooler or get an AIO liquid cooler

go with a Broabwell-E - example: Core i7-6800K

as for that resolution, 2560x1080, not sure but GTX1060 won;t gonna cut it - so, go for a GTX1070 at least

No no no, I just don't want people to recommend an SSD. I'm open to any suggestions on ANY  part of the build besides storage :)

Well the 6800k is almost $60 more expensive for me, so I don't really want to go there. As well, I'm not really looking to overclock, 3.3ghz and 3.6 turbo is fine for me, my 5700HQ is a stock 2.8 and turbos to 3.5 so it'll be an upgrade for me. I don't have the budget to fit a $90 Watercooler. Also, a 970M is good enough for me at that resolution, and the 1060 is a lot better than that so I'm thinking it should be fine overall hopefully. I'm not looking to play like Crysis or Witcher or Hitman.

Grab a PSU with a longer warranty and more silent operation :)

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/Rp8H99/corsair-power-supply-cp9020091na

And do upgrade the CPU cooling. AIO or big air like NH-D15 or Thermalright Le Grand Macho (fanless) + powerful fan.

Consider upgrading your RAM to 32GB if you're going to edit video in Adobe Premiere, and even if you're not, you can still shove the video into a RAMDisk for super smooth scrolling.

If you don't want to OC, a better bet is a 8-core Xeon.

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/XjZ2FT/intel-cpu-bx80660e52620v4

Notice that it still turbos up to 3.0 GHz and you can have it keep turbo speeds even on threaded workloads.

BTW, the Deepcool Gamaxx 400 CPU Cooler is considerably better than a 212 EVO and cheaper.

I'd love to get the 8-core, but I'll try to see if I can even fit that into the budget and still get something like a 1060 or RX 480. That is super interesting tho, that Xeon. I've seen that gammaxx on PCPP, is it really that good? All of this stuff you're mentioning I WANT, but I don't know how to PAY for it :D

Don't trust me about the deepcool, trust the tomshardware review that has it perform on par with $50-60 CPU coolers.

My recommendation is to switch the stock fan out for a better one, like a Corsair ML / NF-F12/P12 / Fractal HP-12

Why switch fan? Acoustics? Performance? If it's something where I'll need to do it for performance or something then it'll cost more in the end then just a 212X or EVO.

Mostly because the stock fan is a blue LED that clashes with some builds.

You can keep it and it will be a capable fan. Don't expect it to be the most silent, it will be just below the Hyper 212 EVO / X in terms of noise.
