what is your opinion on this build

I wouldn't say so. He will be able to max out games with ease for the most part. With the 1060 he will be just on the edge of under 60 fps. If not under in some demanding newer titles.

that'd be down to clock speed most likely, although any intel quad core at 3ghz+ is going to be enough for 60fps in 99% of games, even the i3 6100 is fine for most games

he also probably isn't gaming at anything higher than 1080p, so the 1070 is kind of wasted

im not to worried if i dont max out on all the games, but want all games to run well

difference between high settings and ultra settings generally isn't going to be much if anything, really not worth it, the money is better spent on the i7

basically it's like $100 for 50% more CPU performance(in 8 threaded tasks) vs 20-30% more GPU performance, when the 1060/470/480 already gets the job done at 1080p

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Well he can afford the 1070 in his budget along with the i7.

The RX 470 would be enough for everything, and the 6gb 1060 is a fair amount faster than it, although the 470 here is extra shitty because of the blower fan

And since you're just gaming you don't need much more than an i5 for most cases

what's your display set up?

It's definitely worth getting the 1070. Even a 1080 wont do the job perfectly at that resolution.

i5's get maxed out in a lot of games. The i5 does bottleneck slightly depending on the game/scene.
