Rack mounted stuff

Hi! My friend wants to make a rack mounted server for his home. This reminded me of Linus's personal rig update, so does anyone know what are all the rack mount stuff he has used? Or can someone give good rack mounting hardware, like the railing, the rack, and maybe a case that you can rack mount. Thanks!

Id suggest you get a premade rackserver. There much better than diy and give you many more features. Depending on budget, look on ebay for a dell c2100, r710, r710 or r7910

 

You can get racks from places like craigs list. There normally a few hundred.

 

You will often need cage nuts and screws. You also need rails for the servres.

literally everything is good in sense of case rackmount etc. because everything is standardized. height is measured in u which stands for units, 1 u is one railmounted unit, 2 u is the size of 2 railmounted units etc. just make sure you dont get a patchpanel rackmount, those are less deep than normal rack mountings. but these things are generally VERY expensive (hundereds of dollars for the rackmount alone)

i made my own rack out of a bunch of mis matching parts. I used an adjustable rack frame as it was sturdy and i could adjust the size.
