Hello!

So I have been running a system with two displays for a long time. My graphics card is an R9 270, which supports like 6 displays at once I believe. It has a DVI-D port, an HDMI port, and a Display Port. All of my monitors are fairly old. My main display is DVI, and my seond display is DVI connected through the HDMI port. I had another monitor laying around, so I decided to plug it in, but it's VGA, so I had to use a display port to VGA adapter. With all things plugged in, the second and third monitors turn on when I am in the BIOS, but the main monitor is not turned on. In windows, the main monitor and the third monitor (With the DP to VGA) are turned on. In the display settings menu, the 2nd monitor is there, but it is entirely greyed out.  I really don't know what the problem is, because all 3 monitors work, and the GPU supports up to six monitors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sam

Before anyone else replies with something about active DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI adapters, I'll comment on this point.

Older AMD cards (like the R9 270) can only run up to two monitors with any combination of the following:

VGA

DVI

HDMI

DVI to VGA passive adapter

DVI to HDMI passive adapter (or vice versa)

DisplayPort to DVI / HDMI passive adapter

Any additional monitors beyond two must be connected with a native DisplayPort connection, which includes:

DisplayPort

DisplayPort to VGA converter ("active" adapter)

DisplayPort to DVI converter ("active" adapter)

DisplayPort to HDMI converter ("active" adapter)

Since you are using a DisplayPort to VGA converter, this shouldn't be the problem, so I'm not sure why it isn't working.

Well, that's irritating. Im using a passive DP to VGA adapter, so I guess thats the problem. I already know that at some point in the near future Im going to have to replace my entire rig, and all 3 of my monitors are ALMOST as old as I am, so it might be time to upgrade those too, lol.

No such thing, all DP to VGA adapters are "active", they're just inexpensive and small because DisplayPort is well-designed.

yes yes that may be the problem. i had the same problem. i tried many combinations but all i needed was an active adapter.
