Hey so here is my build: http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/list/gJrPFd

Just wanted some feed back and also a specific question: Do I need a 6600k for gaming? I will only be playing some cpu intensive games but I was wondering if it was worth the extra ~$150 for the cpu cooler and cpu price itself.

Thanks :)

Uh I wouldn't get a 6600k with a h170 motherboard, no overclocking. Or you could get a 6600 no k. Up to you. Power supply isn't the most efficient but tbh I have a no name PSU from thermaltake that isn't even rated and I've had it for like 2 years so maybe you'll be fine.

For those CPU intensive games, you'll be fine since you are gaming at 1080p.

EDIT: If you decide to get a 6600 or any non k cpu, you won't need an expensive aftermarket cooler because low temps don't really matter, just playable ones.

Oh I see, then I think I might just switch to 6600. Thanks

Yea, that's a good idea if you are going to stick to that motherboard, the k is more expensive because of the overclocking feature, and to not be able to use it is a waste of money. That's what happened to me with my i7-4790k, and when I found out it was too late.

Tone down to 6500 and get better PSU.

I changed the CPU and PSU.

And also you can get rid of that cooler if you don't mind the stock cooler so that will cut the cost down more.

I think I'll kind of merge the ideas and get an i5 6600, stock cooler, with the Seasonic psu

That will do as well, stock cooler is more than enough for a locked cpu.

If you feel the price difference can justify the 0.3 GHz increase then do that.

To be honest, I wouldn't bother.

The next gen of CPUs are just a few months away, so I wouldn't build anything now.

Intel Cannonlake & AMD Zen CPUs aren't just refinements, they are new generation CPUs, and both will deliver massive extra power, with lower TDP requirements. Both will also push the cost of current gen processors lower, by a significant margin. All CPU's depreciate in value over time, but when Cannonlake launches, you can knock at least 50% off what is left. But before then, Intel Kabylake CPUs have only just launched too, and their volume is currently too small to drive down prices, but by Christmas, those CPUs should be much more widely available, and will also drive down the price of the CPUs you mention.

Of course, there is always a reason to hold off for the next big thing, in which case you might never buy anything. But in this instance, just months before AMD launch ZEN, it would seem hasty, (even if you don't buy ZEN, the competition should force Intel into significant price drops). If I needed a PC now, I would go second hand, build cheap & cheerful until the new CPUs are here. But hey, that's me!

Haha I didn't even know a new gen was coming out. I was going to wait for christmas anyway and was just brainstorming ideas, but I guess I have another reason now :) . Thanks for the info!
