Always start without I say, then see what you can add. For Dac/AMP specifically make sure you can easily return it if you can't notice a strong difference. That's the key factor. Headphones too of course :)

Well, I would only consider a DAC/amp combo when using a cheap laptop. Especially a Dell. The Inspiron 15 has the most pathetic audio chip. It sounds hollow. A DAC makes a huge difference here.

If you have a custom-built desktop, chances are that your motherboard comes with a decent DAC already.

And do you have to get closed headphones? The M40x is a good all-rounder. It's portable, durable and isolates well. But the comfort is lacking with smaller, harder pads and some clamping force. I can't recommend the Philips SHP 9500 enough. The sound is so clear and the bass is punchy and tight. And they're so comfy, you can wear them all day. They just sit on your head and the earpads are huge and soft.

My suggestions will vary due to your usage and budget. Are you going to use it with a portable setup? IE phone or at home with desktop?

If with a portable on the go setup, I would suggest a closed back setup. The M40X and M50X are great and with a portable dac/amp FIIO E11K is well worth the investment.

At home I would recommend an openback setup such as AD700X or AD900X with an Objective2 Dac/Amp Combo.
