Hello all!

I just joined this forum, since they keep talking in LTT videos about how great you all are! I'm building my first desktop, and I picked out some parts already but I thought I'd just post it here and see what people think. I already showed it to a friend of mine and incorporated some of his suggestions, but for a big purchase like this, it never hurts to get more opinions.

The parts I picked: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/XjVNcc

1. Budget and Location

My original goal was to spend about $1000 (US). I decided that if I'm going to do this, I want to spend the money on a good one. So I decided to start with a GTX 1070, and a Skylake i5 processor, and then I picked out the other parts from there. I went over a bit and ended up at about $1150, and I can afford that.

2. Aim

Gaming. I want to be able to run modern, triple A titles on the highest settings, and I want this thing to last me quite a while. I also like the idea of it having the horsepower to support VR if I decide to try that at some point in the future. For starters I'll probably grab The Witcher 3 and Overwatch, and I'm incredibly excited for Mass Effect: Andromeda next year.

3. Monitors

For now, I plan on hooking it up to my 1080P, 45" LCD TV. At some point I may invest in a monitor, possibly something at 1440 or 4k, but I already have a pretty nice TV that's been great for gaming on my PS4, so for now I'm going to start with that rather then dropping more cash on top of what I'm spending on the desktop itself.

4. Peripherals

I don't plan on getting any to start. I have a keyboard and mouse that I quite like, a wired Xbox 360 controller that I'll use for some games, and as I mentioned above I'll be using my TV as a monitor. I also already have a copy of Windows 10 on an old laptop, and I plan on moving that license over to the new desktop.

5. Why are you upgrading?

I've been primarily a console gamer for most of my life, but I've decided it's time to transition to PC. Many of my friends play games on PC, and there's all sorts of exciting stuff happening on PC, such as VR. Plus, the upcoming PS4.5 and similar upgraded Xbox One are, in my opinion, a stupid idea that goes against the simplicity that's supposed to come with consoles. And the only computer I currently have is... an eight year old laptop. There's no way that thing is going to play any games.

Thanks in advance for any input from any of you!

No problems I can see for starting out. The GTX 1070 will be plenty for when you up the resolution to 1440p.

But TV's tend to have latency. If there's a "gaming mode" on the TV, that may help to reduce the latency. However, coming from consoles, it's something you're probably used to already.

I'm going to disagree with the i7 here due to the lower frequency and that the PC will be used for gaming and not heavily threaded loads.

Wow, that was fast! Thanks for the input!

@dexxterlab97 I agree that I'll probably need more storage at some point. I'll plan on adding a 1TB HDD in the not-too-distant future, but I think I'll be okay for starters with just the 480gb SSD. Adding drives is a relatively simple upgrade to do when needed, I believe.

@Wicked Jester I actually had the 6600, not the 6600k. I don't think I want to get into overclocking the processor on my first computer. So I opted to save a little bit and go with the lower cost and lower TDP, non-k processor and a non-overclocking motherboard.

@Funtron5000 I hadn't considered the latency of TVs. I don't notice it on my TV with my PS4 (and I do notice it on some other people's TVs) so mine isn't too bad, and whatever's there I'm already used to. I tend to play by myself, or casually with friends, with a preference for co-op over competitive, so I think I'll be okay. I'll definitely keep that in mind though if I do end up getting into anything very competetive.

@Fungal @GDRRiley Is putting powerful stuff like a 1070 in a mini case on a micro ATX board going to make heat an issue? Smaller cases have less room for airflow right? I do like the idea of a smaller rig, but I was worried about heat. As I mentioned, this will be my first desktop, so I was mostly just guessing that a mini case would be too small for these kind of components.

yes but both do not create as much heat as older parts and should be fine. for my build you can grab a 120m fan for the front if you are worried

I was certain I saw 6600k. My bad.
