Is there a way to keep Windows Defender's Real Time Protection of when you boot. I have to manually turn it of. Also is there a way to put windows 10 in performance mode?

When you say "of", do you mean "off", as in to "stop" protection?

You can of course fully disable Windows Defender. But I do not believe you can shut off protection during bootup only.

Windows Defender is one of the lighter AV's out there, so if you're having performance issues, most AV's are going to be a problem.

You might try BitDefender Free and Avira Free editions. Those are both very light AV's.

BTW, if you're gonna bother having an AV at all (Which, let's be frank, in the modern digital world, you need an AV, as common sense won't cut it anymore), then you definitely want that AV running at all times.

Not sure why you would want todo that apart from speed, but installing a separate antivirus generally disables it anyhow, and it is probably more secure. May i suggest AVAST, i've never had it fail for me.

Well, An AV is still a good idea. Even if you just use windows defender. Not to be rude but the people who get viruses the most are people like you who are think they are safe. And I never have any performance issues with the anti virus I use but your experience depends on things like your pc speeds and internet speeds. You can just turn it off in settings in windows 10 and if you open it on windows 7 or 8, not sure with 8 never used it. but you can just go to setting in the application and turn it off there.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you're wrong.

What if you navigate to a website with infected ads? What if you navigate to LTT forums right after it's been hacked, and the entire site is compromised? What if you get exposed to a Zero-Day SSL exploit that bypasses normal security to deliver a virus to your system?

Hell, you might not even know you're infected sometimes.

Quite simply, common sense (or "I am pretty safe"), is insufficient. Period. You can certainly take the risk - that's cool. You're in charge of your own destiny in that regard. But the statement "I won't get them" is pure arrogance and/or naivety.

So, now that we've gotten that out of the way. Can you please list the full specs of your PC, including all the model/part numbers for major components? Also please list your Internet Connection (what you pay for, eg: 150/10 or 60/2, etc), and then do a SpeedTest and post the results?

I got an annoying ad-ware thing on my work laptop, which was using Win 10 Defender. I installed Avira (free) which found it and deleting it. Since then, I've had no other issues (that I'm aware of) so.woild whole recommend Avira.

You get one tiny pop-up maybe 1-2 yes per week, which is the only downside. But the pop up is only for Avira (paid) and I just knew click to close.
